Oahu Food Tour: A Self-Guided Route by Area

A guided food tour on Oahu costs about $110 to $190 per person. You can eat through the same neighborhoods on your own for the price of the food if you pick the right day. This route splits the island into six areas, a half day each, with what to order at every stop.

Oahu’s local food is spread across neighborhoods: poke and malasadas on Kapahulu Avenue, dim sum and market stalls in Chinatown, poi up the Windward coast, and shrimp in Kahuku, more than an hour from Waikiki. Take one area at a time and eat in the right order.

This is the counter-and-plate-lunch version of the island. For sit-down meals and special-occasion dinners, see the best food on Oahu.

Hours are from each business’s site or Google listing, checked September 2026. Every card links to its listing; check it the morning you go.

  • One area per half day. Plate lunches are big, so order one for two and keep room for the next stop.
  • Car or feet. Kapahulu, Kaimuki and Chinatown are walkable once you arrive; the Windward coast, the North Shore and Waipahu need a car. Waikiki to Haleiwa is about an hour (33 miles) and Waikiki to Kahuku about 1 hour 12 minutes (38 miles). On TheBus, Haleiwa is about 1 hour 35 to 40 minutes from Ala Moana (Route 52) and Kahuku about 2 hours (Route 60), plus the ride from Waikiki. See our guide to renting a car on Oahu.
  • Bring cash for the Kahuku shrimp stops and the smaller counters.
  • Budget for tax. Hawaiʻi’s general excise tax (4.712% on Oahu) often comes on top of menu prices: Highway Inn’s May 2026 menus add it, plus a 5% “Mahalo Kitchen Charge.”

Oahu Food Tour Questions

How much does a food tour on Oahu cost?

About $110 to $190 per person for a guided tour (Viator, September 2026); the 3-hour Chinatown walk starts at $150. A self-guided tour costs what you eat.

What is the best day for a self-guided food tour in Honolulu?

Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Helena’s Hawaiian Food is open Tuesday to Friday only, and Monday is the worst day: Ono Seafood, Helena’s and Palace Saimin are all closed.

Do I need a car for an Oahu food tour?

Not for Honolulu: Kapahulu, Kaimuki and Chinatown are walkable once you arrive. The Windward coast, the North Shore and Waipahu need a car, or a long bus ride: about 1 hour 35 minutes from Ala Moana to Haleiwa on Route 52.

Should I bring cash?

Yes. Carry some for the Kahuku shrimp stops and smaller counters, and budget for Hawaii’s 4.712% general excise tax, which often comes on top of menu prices.

Is there a vegetarian food tour on Oahu?

The Hawaiian Food Tour by Bike welcomes vegetarian, vegan and paleo diets.
