Ted’s is the North Shore’s pie stop that also runs a full plate-lunch kitchen, open 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day across the road from Sunset Beach. Order a garlic shrimp special and the slice comes with it. If the chocolate haupia pie is the whole reason for the drive, call first.

Chocolate haupia cream pie
A chocolate cream layer and a haupia (coconut pudding) layer in a pie shell, sold whole or by the slice. Ted’s calls itself the home of the original.
What to Order
Start with the chocolate haupia cream pie, whole or by the slice. The garlic shrimp and spicy garlic shrimp special plates come with two scoops of rice, mac salad and a free slice of pie or cake. The loco moco and the fried rice special are breakfast favorites, and the pineapple mac nut cheesecake is the other dessert people ask for. The Store and the Bakery
Takemitsu Nakamura built the family store in 1956; in the 1970s it sold gas and a few groceries. His son Ted opened the bakery inside it in 1987, and it now serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from one counter. The pie made its name, and Star-Advertiser readers have voted it Hawaiʻi’s Best pie in most years since 2016. Order at the counter and take it across the road to Sunset Beach.

Hours and the Pie
Ted’s is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and its own Instagram notes that hours may vary. On September 22, 2026, it posted that the chocolate haupia pie would be temporarily unavailable for a couple of days because of an equipment issue, so call (808) 638-8207 or check @tedsbakeryhi before a special trip. Whole pies and cakes can be ordered ahead online or by phone; sheet cakes need two to three days.
Getting There
Ted’s is at 59-024 Kamehameha Highway in Sunset Beach; the mailing address says Haleiwa, but Haleiwa town is about 8 miles southwest. From Waikiki it is about an hour and 40.6 miles; from the airport about 46 minutes. Pipeline is 1.4 miles away and Turtle Bay about 4. Consider Instead
- Paalaa Kai Bakery sits five minutes from Haleiwa town and is the pick for snow puffies and warm Sada’s malassadas. It opens at 6 a.m. every day, two hours before Ted’s.
- Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck is the pick if garlic shrimp is the whole point: a dozen jumbo shrimp and two scoops of rice, three ways, eaten under a covered pavilion in Kahuku. Bring cash.
