Pearl Harbor, Hawaii: the map and visitor guide

Pearl Harbor is several sites run by different organizations: the Visitor Center and the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Bowfin beside them, and the Battleship Missouri and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum across the water on Ford Island. This is the planning page, with every site, the Ford Island shuttle, parking and bag storage on one map.

Pearl Harbor, Section by Section

Pearl Harbor is an active Navy base. The National Park Service calls the USS Arizona the final resting place for over 900 of the 1,177 crewmen who died on December 7, 1941, so people speak quietly at the memorial, and this page tries to do the same.

Pearl Harbor is on Oahu, on the south side of the island. Which island Pearl Harbor is on answers that in a few lines, and the map above shows where each site sits, so you can plan the order of the day before you leave.

The USS Arizona Memorial

The memorial spans the sunken battleship, and the National Park Service calls the Arizona the final resting place for over 900 of its crew. The program takes about 45 minutes, including the boat ride on a Navy vessel. It is free, with a $1 fee per ticket charged by Recreation.gov.

Reservations are made only on Recreation.gov. Tickets are released at 3 p.m. Hawaii time, 56 days ahead and again one day ahead. Without a reservation, a free standby callback is possible, but standby seats are limited and cannot be guaranteed. The Navy runs the boats and can suspend or change them for high winds or rain, so leave some room in the day. Our tickets guide has the booking steps.

The Pearl Harbor Passport

The Passport ($99.99 adult, $49.99 child) covers the Battleship Missouri, the USS Bowfin and the Aviation Museum. It does not include a USS Arizona Memorial reservation, so book the memorial on its own. Is the Passport worth it? compares it against buying each ticket.

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center

The Visitor Center is where the day starts. It is free and open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with two exhibit galleries and a 23-minute park film. The Arizona boats leave from here, and so does the shuttle to Ford Island.

The film plays at :15 and :45 past each hour. It is separate from the Arizona program, so watching it does not use a reservation. Our visiting guide covers the day-of details.

Without base access, the only way onto Ford Island is the free shuttle, which leaves from behind the USS Bowfin. It loops to the Battleship Missouri and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. You may be asked for ID when you board, and photos are not allowed on the bridge.

Before You Go

Arrive an hour before your Arizona program time. Bags that hide their contents are not allowed into the Visitor Center or the memorial, so a clear bag is fine and anything else goes to bag storage, to the right as you enter. Parking is $7 a day, paid by app or QR code.

For kids, note that the Bowfin does not allow children under 4 aboard. For time, the Arizona program takes about 45 minutes, and the Missouri suggests allowing 1 to 2 hours for its visit. Our visiting guide has the full bag rules and the day plan.

Getting There From Waikiki

Pearl Harbor is a short trip from Waikiki by car, bus or guided tour, and which one fits depends on whether you hold an Arizona reservation.

By car, put the address, 1 Arizona Memorial Place, in your map app rather than the name, so it does not send you to the base. The Ford Island bridge next to the Visitor Center is for military traffic only, and if you turn onto it by mistake you will be asked to turn around.

By bus, the westbound stop at the Arizona Memorial is closed for Routes 20 and 42. Use the stop at Kamehameha Highway and Kalaloa Street instead. Tour companies cannot book the free public Arizona tickets, so if the memorial matters most, check that a tour’s listing names the Arizona Memorial program before you book.

Pearl Harbor Questions

Can you go on the USS Arizona Memorial?

Yes, through the Arizona Memorial program. A Navy boat takes visitors from the Visitor Center to the memorial, which spans the sunken battleship. Visitors stand on the memorial, not on the ship.

How long does the USS Arizona Memorial visit take?

The program lasts about 45 minutes, including the Navy boat ride and time at the memorial. Arrive at the park an hour before your program time and check in 10 minutes before the boat leaves. The 23-minute park film is separate.

Is the USS Arizona Memorial free?

Yes. The program is free, and Recreation.gov charges a $1 non-refundable fee per ticket. The Visitor Center and its galleries are free as well.

How many crew are still aboard the USS Arizona?

On December 7, 1941, 1,177 of the Arizona’s crew died. The National Park Service calls the ship the final resting place for over 900 of them.

Why does oil still surface near the USS Arizona?

Oil still seeps from the sunken ship a drop at a time, and visitors see a sheen on the water by the memorial. The National Park Service estimates about half a million gallons remain in the stern and says it monitors the leak. Many people call the drops the tears of the fallen.

Can you visit the USS Arizona Memorial without a reservation?

Sometimes. Reservations are strongly recommended, and they are made on Recreation.gov only, released at 3 p.m. Hawaii time, 56 days ahead and one day ahead. Same-day tickets are no longer given out in person. A free standby callback is available at the Visitor Center, but standby seats are limited and cannot be guaranteed. Our tickets guide explains how it works.

Can you visit the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma Memorials?

Both are on Ford Island and open to visitors with military ID or base access. Everyone else can take the ranger-led Ford Island Bus Tour, booked on Recreation.gov 14 days ahead for a $1 fee.

Is Pearl Harbor open on December 7?

Yes. The Visitor Center closes only on Thanksgiving, December 25 and January 1, so it is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the anniversary. Check nps.gov/perl for that day’s schedule. Our Remembrance Day guide covers National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
