Getting Around · Circle Island
Circle Island Tour or Drive It Yourself?
The loop around Oahu is about 100 to 110 miles and a full day either way. The question is who drives. A group circle island tour costs $75 to $149 a person and runs a fixed script from your hotel. A rental car costs about the same for one person as for four and lets you stop where you want. Here is the quick verdict, the real costs for one, two and a family of four, and the four tours we would book.

The Quick Verdict
Tour or Drive?
- Take a tour ifyou are traveling solo, you would rather not drive Hawaii highways, or you want a guide narrating the whole loop.
- Drive it yourself ifthere are two or more of you, you want to swim at Hanauma Bay, you want to linger at some stops and skip others, or you already have a rental car.
- Go private ifyour group wants its own stop list and hotel pickup without anyone driving. It is $377 a person, two minimum.
The math is simple. A tour is priced per head, so it costs twice as much for two people and four times as much for four. A car costs the same whether it carries one person or four. That single fact decides most of these trips before you ever look at a stop list.

Circle Island Tour vs Driving: The Cost
Total cost for the day, by group size. Tour prices are Viator’s regular rates on September 26, 2026. The family is two adults and two kids between 4 and 11, and the two paid stops are Hanauma Bay and Diamond Head, entry and parking.
| 1 traveler | 2 travelers | Family of 4 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget bus tour | $75 | $150 | $300 |
| Classic full-day tour | $140 | $280 | $472 |
| Small-group snorkel tour | $149 | $298 | $556 |
| Private tour | 2-person minimum | $754 | $1,508 |
| Drive: car and gas | $63–106 | $63–106 | $75–115 |
| Drive + both paid stops | $106–149 | $136–179 | $148–188 |
- How we priced the car. Our estimate, September 2026. One-day economy and compact rentals were advertised at $27 to $56, and Hawaii adds a $7.50 daily rental surcharge, a vehicle license recovery fee of about $5 a day and 4.712% excise tax on top, which lands at $45 to $85 all in. A family needs a midsize or small SUV, which is why that column starts higher. Gas for the loop is $18 to $21 at 30 miles a gallon and AAA’s Hawaii average of $5.59 on September 26. Our guide to renting a car on Oahu covers the rest.
- What the two paid stops add. Hanauma Bay is $25 per adult (kids 12 and under free) plus $3 to park. Diamond Head is $5 per person plus $10 to park. The family column prices Diamond Head for the two adults, so check the kids’ rate when you book.
- The budget tour was on sale. It listed at $37.50 a person, half its regular $75, when we checked. The table uses $75.
Read across the rows and the verdict writes itself. Solo, the $75 budget tour beats a rental car the moment you add Hanauma Bay and Diamond Head. For two, driving with both stops costs $68 to $90 a person against $140 on the classic tour. For a family of four, it is $148 to $188 for the day against $472.
What a Guided Oahu Circle Island Tour Covers
Every tour below runs the same loop in the same direction: Diamond Head and the southeast shore in the morning, the windward coast, lunch on the North Shore, then Dole Plantation and back through the middle of the island. They take 6 to 9 hours, you ride with a guide who narrates the whole way, and stops are short. Two of the four give most landmarks 10 to 30 minutes.
One thing to know before you book: none of these tours takes you into the water at Hanauma Bay. The classic full-day tour stops at the lookout above it, and the others skip it; two of them stop at the free Halona Blowhole overlook down the road instead. Snorkeling Hanauma Bay needs its own reservation, tour or no tour. Our Hanauma Bay reservations guide explains how to get one.
Four Circle Island Tours Worth Booking
Grand Circle Island Tour (full or half day)
The classic big-bus loop, with 19,559 reviews and a 4.97 rating on Viator. The 9-hour full day covers Diamond Head and the Kahala estates from the window, the Hanauma Bay lookout, Halona Blowhole, the Pali Lookout, Byodo-In Temple, a macadamia nut and Kona coffee farm, the North Shore surf beaches, lunch and shopping in Haleiwa, and Dole Plantation. It is $140 per adult and $96 for kids 3 to 11. The 6.5-hour half-day version (from $100) drops the Hanauma Bay stop. Lunch is not included. Book it from the card below.
Circle Island Tour by Fil-Am Travel & Tours
The budget pick: $75 a person, adults and kids alike, and it was on sale for $37.50 when we checked. You meet the bus in front of the Queen Kapiolani Hotel on Kapahulu Avenue, facing the zoo, instead of getting hotel pickup. In 8 hours it covers Halona Blowhole, Waimanalo, a macadamia nut and coffee farm, Mokoliʻi at Kualoa Regional Park, a shrimp truck lunch stop on the North Shore, Sunset Beach, Pipeline and Sharks Cove from the bus, a fruit stand, free time to swim at Puaʻena Point Beach, and Dole Plantation. See the budget tour on Viator.
Small-Group Circle Island Tour with Turtle Snorkeling
A minibus instead of a coach, and a day built around the water: about an hour snorkeling with green sea turtles on the North Shore, gear included. Pickup is 7:20 a.m. from select Waikiki hotels, and the 8-hour day adds the Diamond Head and Amelia Earhart lookouts, Halona Blowhole, Mokoliʻi, a North Shore shrimp lunch stop, fruit stands, Sunset Beach, Dole Plantation, Sandy Beach and the Waimanalo beaches. $149 per adult, $129 for kids 4 to 12; food is extra. See the snorkel tour on Viator.
Private Customizable Grand Circle Island Tour
Your own guide and a private Mercedes minivan, with Waikiki and Honolulu hotel pickup and 6 to 8 hours to spend as you like. The usual menu includes Halona Cove, Byodo-In Temple, macadamia nut tasting, Mokoliʻi, the North Shore surf beaches, Waimea Falls, Haleiwa, Dole Plantation, a coffee farm and a Kualoa Ranch viewpoint (the ranch’s own Kualoa Ranch tours are a separate booking). It is $377 per person with a two-person minimum, so $754 for a couple. Lunch and entry fees are extra. See the private tour on Viator.

Driving the Loop Yourself
The standard loop is about 100 to 110 miles and 4 to 6 hours of driving without stops. Add Hanauma Bay, a lookout or two and lunch on the North Shore and it is a 9 to 12 hour day, door to door. That is the same length as the tours; you just set the pace.
Go counterclockwise from Waikiki. Head east past Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay first, up the windward coast in the morning light, across the North Shore in the afternoon, and home through the middle of the island. The real reason is the reservations. Hanauma Bay opens at 6:45 a.m., and its 300 parking spaces are usually full by 7:30. Diamond Head’s timed entries start at 6 a.m. Drive the loop clockwise and you reach both at the end of the day, when the slots and the parking are long gone. All four tours above run the loop the same way.
We don’t repeat the route here. Our Oahu road trip guide walks the loop stop by stop, and the free Oahu scenic drive map puts every stop on a map you can open in the car.
Reservations and Parking on the Loop
Driving yourself means booking and parking yourself. These are the four stops that trip people up.
- Hanauma Bay. Reservations open two days ahead at 7 a.m. Hawaii time, and the bay is closed every Monday and Tuesday, so don’t plan an early-week loop around it. Open 6:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., last entry 1:30 p.m. Entry is $25 per adult, free for kids 12 and under; parking is $3. Details in our Hanauma Bay reservations guide.
- Diamond Head. Everyone who is not a Hawaii resident needs a reservation (walk-ins are turned away), bookable up to 30 days ahead, and parking inside the crater needs its own. Entry slots run from 6 a.m. to a last entry at 4 p.m., and it is $5 per person and $10 to park, by credit card only. The hike takes 60 to 90 minutes. See our Diamond Head reservations guide.
- Laniakea Beach. There is no official lot, just a roadside pull-off on Kamehameha Highway that fills fast. A new lot has been built as part of a road project, but access has been changing, so check the signs. The easy fix: park in Haleiwa and walk about a mile.
- Haleiwa town. A free public lot on Kamehameha Highway near Matsumoto Shave Ice is usually open. It is busiest on summer Saturday afternoons.
Which One Should You Book?
- Solo on a budget: the budget bus tour. At $75 (less when it is on sale) it beats a rental car plus the paid stops, and nobody has to find parking.
- First trip, no interest in driving: the classic full-day tour. Hotel pickup, a guide the whole way and the most-reviewed circle island tour on Viator.
- Want to be in the water: the small-group snorkel tour, or drive yourself and book Hanauma Bay. No tour here gets you into Hanauma Bay.
- Two or more people: drive. The car costs the same for four as for one, you choose where to linger, and if you have rented a car for the week anyway, the loop only costs you gas and whatever you stop for.
- A group that wants neither a bus nor a driving shift: the private tour, at $377 a person, two minimum.
Circle Island Tour vs Driving FAQ
How long does a circle island tour of Oahu take?
The four tours here run 6 to 9 hours. The classic big-bus tour is about 9 hours for the full loop (6.5 for its half-day version), the budget and snorkel tours are 8, and the private tour is 6 to 8. Driving it yourself is 4 to 6 hours behind the wheel; with stops, plan on a full day.
Is it cheaper to drive around Oahu yourself or take a tour?
For two or more people, driving is cheaper, because the car and gas cost the same no matter how many ride along. For one person, the budget bus tour at $75 beats a rental car once Hanauma Bay and Diamond Head fees are added.
Does a circle island tour go into Hanauma Bay?
No. None of the four tours here takes you into the water at Hanauma Bay. The classic full-day tour stops at the lookout above it; the others skip it. To snorkel there, book your own Hanauma Bay reservation ($25 per adult) for a different morning or drive yourself.
Which direction should you drive around Oahu?
Counterclockwise from Waikiki: east past Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay first, up the windward coast, across the North Shore in the afternoon, and back through the middle of the island. The early reservations and parking on the east side are the reason.
How many miles is the drive around Oahu?
About 100 to 110 miles for the standard loop, 4 to 6 hours of driving without stops. Door to door with stops, budget 9 to 12 hours.
Do circle island tours pick you up in Waikiki?
Three of the four do: the classic big-bus tour, the small-group snorkel tour and the private tour all include Waikiki and Honolulu hotel pickup. The budget tour meets in front of the Queen Kapiolani Hotel on Kapahulu Avenue.
