Waikiki Parking
Parking in Waikiki runs from free on the curb to $93.19 a night at a hotel valet stand, and the cheapest reliable overnight spot is a $1-an-hour harbor lot most visitors never hear about. Here is every option with the rate each operator publishes, as of September 2026: the street meters, the Ala Wai Boulevard tow-away mornings, the Waikiki Banyan and Marina garages, the shopping-center garages, hotel overnight fees, and parking for Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay.

Do You Need a Car in Waikiki?
For the days you spend in Waikiki, usually not. The beach, Kalakaua Avenue and most of the restaurants are a walk from the hotels, and a rental car mostly sits in a garage that costs $45 to $93.19 a night. The cars that pay off are the ones you rent for the days you leave town.
- TheBus. A single ride is $3.25 in exact cash with no transfers, or $3 on a HOLO card, which works as a 2-hour pass (the card costs $2). HOLO fares stop at $7.50 a day, and a 7-day pass is $45, per TheBus.
- Biki bikeshare. A walk-up ride is $5 for up to 30 minutes, plus $5.25 for each extra 30 minutes, per Biki. It suits short hops to Ala Moana Center, the zoo or Kapiʻolani Park.
- Rideshare and taxis. Fares vary with the time of day and demand, so check the app for the price before you book. For the airport run, our Honolulu airport to Waikiki guide compares every option.
The plan that works for most trips: no car for the Waikiki days, then a one- or two-day rental for the North Shore, the windward coast or a full loop of the island. Our guide to renting a car on Oahu walks through when a car is the better call.

Waikiki Street Parking: Meters and the Park Smarter App
Waikiki’s metered stalls charge $3 an hour (50 cents for 10 minutes) from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., every day, under the City’s parking ordinance. Outside those hours the meters are free. Check the posted time limit at each stall, and read every sign on the block: loading zones and tow-away hours override the meter.
Per the City’s meters page, you can pay with a credit or debit card, coins, Apple Pay or Google Pay at the meter, or through the Park Smarter app, which the City calls its only parking payment app. Text to Pay lets you pay by text message without installing anything.
Scam Warning
Fake QR Stickers on Waikiki Meters
The City has warned about fraudulent Park Smarter QR code stickers found on meters in Waikiki and Kakaʻako. A real code either opens the app or sends you to the App Store or Google Play to download it. If a scan lands anywhere else, such as a payment web page, the sticker is fake. Don’t enter a card number; download Park Smarter from the app store yourself.
From the City and County of Honolulu, still posted in September 2026.
Ala Wai Boulevard: Free Parking and the Tow-Away Mornings
Ala Wai Boulevard runs along the canal on Waikiki’s inland edge, and its curb has no meters. That makes it the free parking spot people staying on the mauka side of Waikiki talk about, and the one visitors get towed from.
- The tow-away: posted signs ban parking from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays, except state holidays, for street sweeping, on both sides of the boulevard.
- It is enforced. Cars still there after 8:30 a.m. on a sweep morning get ticketed and towed. Mopeds and motorcycles get no exemption.
- Read the sign on your block. The posted sign is the rule, so check it every time you park, not just the first night.
If you park here overnight, set an alarm for Monday and Friday mornings and move the car before 8:30. Past the tow fee, you lose the morning getting the car back.
Waikiki Parking Garages, Rate by Rate
These are the garages and lots visitors ask about most, from the Hilton Hawaiian Village end of Waikiki to the zoo end. Each card has the rate the operator publishes, as of September 2026. To see where each one sits against your hotel, open our Waikiki map.
Waikiki Banyan Parking Garage
The Waikiki Banyan’s public garage charges $50 for 24 hours, a rate the Banyan posts as applying while construction work goes on in the garage. The ticket includes in and out privileges for its 24 hours. Public parking is first come, first served, paid by credit card only, one ticket at a time, all sales final, with a 6-foot height limit. The 4 free hours on the Banyan’s parking page are for registered guests and owners, not the public. It sits on Ohua Avenue, a short walk from Kuhio Beach and the zoo.
Marina Parking Garage, Waikiki
The Marina Parking Garage by the Ilikai, at the western edge of Waikiki, does not publish its rates. Its operator, Elite Parking Services, asks drivers to email the location manager for rates, per its own page. Get a quote in writing before you commit to a week. If you want a published number in this corner of Waikiki, the Ala Wai Boat Harbor lot below is a short walk away.
Ala Wai Boat Harbor Parking
The best value in this guide. Secure Parking HI runs the public paid stalls at the harbor for $1 an hour, with a 24-hour maximum stay, per its page. Pay by credit card at the on-site pay stations (no cash). There are no gates, so you can drive in at any hour, and you enter from Ala Moana Boulevard. It is a walk to the Hilton Hawaiian Village end of Waikiki rather than the middle of the strip, and at 24 hours you still pay $24.
International Market Place Parking
International Market Place has its own garage, with validation when you make a purchase at the center. Its rates and validation terms are on IMP’s parking page and posted at the garage entrance; check them there before you park, because they change. Use it for an evening of shopping or dinner in central Waikiki, not an overnight.
Royal Hawaiian Center Parking
Royal Hawaiian Center publishes every rate on its visit page. With a same-day receipt of $25 or more, the first hour is free, the second and third hours are $3 each, and every hour after that is $8. Without validation it is $4 per 30 minutes ($8 an hour). Hawaii residents and military with ID get the first three hours free on the same $25 purchase. The garage is open 24 hours, with 600-plus stalls over 7 levels and 6-foot-2 clearance. Validate at Helumoa Hale Guest Services, Building B, Level 1, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Fort DeRussy Parking (Hale Koa Garage)
The garage at the Hale Koa, the military hotel on Fort DeRussy, is open to the general public, at a higher rate than military families pay. Per the rate card on Hale Koa’s parking page, the public pays $10 for the first hour, $5 for each additional half hour, and $95 maximum for 24 hours. The same rates apply in the main garage and the Saratoga lot. Pay at the automated pay station before you walk back to the car; you then have 30 minutes to exit. It is the closest garage to the quiet beach in front of Fort DeRussy.
Free Parking in Waikiki (and Next Door)
Free parking in Waikiki comes with a condition every time. These are the options that are free by the rules, not by luck.
- Ala Wai Boulevard. Free curb parking, as long as the car is gone from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays (section 04).
- Waikiki meters after 10 p.m. Metered stalls are free from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Pay from 6 a.m. or move the car.
- Ala Moana Center. Just west of Waikiki, the center says on its visit page that “parking at Ala Moana Center is free for customers and employees.” It also runs paid parking zones for people heading to the beach, hotels and events nearby, so park as a shopper and follow the zone signs.
- The Honolulu Zoo lot. Not free: it is a paid lot on Kapahulu Avenue for zoo and park visitors. Check the rate and time limit at the pay station.

|---|---|---|
| Hilton Hawaiian Village | $72.25 | $93.19 |

| The Royal Hawaiian | $55 | $65 |

The big resorts run $55 to $93.19 a night. A few smaller hotels, including White Sands, Prince Waikiki and Aqua Palms, sit under $50. If your hotel isn’t on this list, ask at booking and add the nightly rate to your car budget. Choosing a hotel? Our best Waikiki hotels guide lists resort fees and parking hotel by hotel, and where to stay on Oahu covers the rest of the island.
Parking for a Diamond Head or Hanauma Bay Day Trip
- Diamond Head. Out-of-state visitors need a reservation, and parking is booked with it: $10 per car on top of $5 per person, credit card only, up to 30 days ahead. Anyone without a reservation is turned away. Walk in, take TheBus or get dropped off with an entry-only reservation and you skip the parking fee. Our Diamond Head reservations guide walks through the booking.
- Hanauma Bay. Parking can’t be reserved: it is first come, first served, and your entry reservation doesn’t hold a stall. Non-residents pay $3 per car, cash only, charged each time you enter with no in and out, per the City. When the lot is full you wait for it to reopen or find legal street parking and walk in. See our Hanauma Bay reservations guide for the rest.
Keeping the Car Safe, and EV Charging
Rental cars get broken into in Waikiki. They are easy to spot and often sit untouched for hours. Hale Koa’s own parking sign puts it plainly: “Do not leave any valuables in vehicle. Lock vehicles and secure all windows. We are not liable for theft or damage.” Most garages say the same.
- Leave nothing in sight. Not a bag, a phone cable or a beach tote. Put valuables in the hotel safe, not the trunk at the beach.
- Load up before you park. Moving things into the trunk in the lot shows anyone watching where they are.
- Lock and close everything, windows and sunroof included, even for a five-minute stop.
EV charging in Waikiki is hit or miss. Some hotel garages have chargers, but they are often for hotel guests only. Don’t count on public charging at any garage in this guide without asking the operator first, and if you rent an EV, ask your hotel before you book whether it has a charger you can use.
