Outrigger Waikiki Review
The first Outrigger, opened in 1967 on the old Outrigger Canoe Club site, is mid-way through a $100 million makeover: the rooms are done, Duke’s never closed, and the club lounge returns in January 2027.

The 30-second verdict
Book the Outrigger for new rooms on the sand in the middle of Waikiki, with Duke’s, Hula Grill and Blue Note downstairs. Wait for 2027 if you want the full hotel: the club lounge is closed, and the gym and most of the cultural classes are at sister hotels during the work.

Known for
Duke’s on the sand
The hotel stands on the site of the old Outrigger Canoe Club, the club Duke Kahanamoku frequented, and Duke’s Waikiki sits right on the beach below it.
The Renovated Rooms
Outrigger announced a $100 million renovation in April 2026 and kept the hotel open through it. The 524 rooms were renovated first: custom furniture, local art including Zak Noyle’s ocean photography and a Kamea Hadar mural, and a private lanai in every room type. The current room list shows oceanfront only in Club categories.

Club Rooms and Suites
Club rooms sit on the top floors, and the two suites, the Club Oceanfront Corner Suite and the Club 1 Bedroom Oceanfront Suite, have wraparound lanai facing the beach and Diamond Head. The catch this season: the Voyager 47 Club Lounge, where Club guests get breakfast and sunset bites, closed on February 28, 2026 and reopens on January 1, 2027 at three times its old size. Ask what the front desk offers instead before you pay for Club.
Pool
There is one pool, open 8 AM to 8 PM, looking onto the beach, with loungers and shade first come, first served and towels on your room key. It has no lifeguard, no slide and no cabanas. The pool area is still part of the renovation, so ask about it when you book.
Spa and Gym
The Outrigger has no spa. Until the work ends, guests use the gym at the Outrigger Waikiki Paradise, 6 AM to 10 PM.
The Beach Out Front
The hotel is on the sand between the Royal Hawaiian and the Moana Surfrider, with city lifeguard tower 2A about 100 meters east. Canoes, the classic Waikiki surf break, is offshore, and Faith Surf School teaches right in front of the hotel. Aqualani rents beach gear, 8 AM to 5 PM; the resort fee covers towels, not chairs. The walled Kuhio Beach swim basins are about 5 minutes east, where a state sand project starts in fall 2026. What the Resort Fee Covers
The $50 fee covers WiFi for four devices, Bishop Museum admission for up to two guests, a free Waikiki Aquarium junior ticket per paying adult, and free breakfast at Duke’s or Hula Grill for kids 3 and under with an adult meal. The lei, hula and ukulele classes it includes run at the Outrigger Beachcomber and Waikiki Paradise during the renovation. A free vow renewal runs on the beach deck Mondays and Thursdays at 8 AM. There is no kids club.

Restaurants and Bars
Three venues share the building, all open to non-guests and all kept open through the renovation: Duke’s Waikiki on the sand, Hula Grill Waikiki above it, and Blue Note Hawaii for dinner with a show. Kani Ka Pila Grille is at the sister Outrigger Reef, not here.
| Venue | Food | Meals | Dress code | Book |

| Hula Grill Waikiki | Island seafood and steak | Breakfast, lunch, dinner, daily | Casual; aloha shirt suggested | (808) 923-4852 or online |

Duke’s WaikikiBeachfront restaurant and bar
Duke’s Waikiki sits on the sand below the hotel, open daily 7 AM to midnight. The casual bar side pours tropical cocktails from 11 AM; the Dining Room serves fresh fish, steak and the buffets, and reservations there are recommended. Order the macadamia nut and herb crusted fresh fish ($43), the poke tacos ($25) and one Hula Pie ($15) for the table. Dinner entrees run $23.50 to $74. Live music plays every afternoon and night, and Henry Kapono takes the Sunday 4 to 6 PM set. It suits families and friends. Tip: kids 3 and under eat breakfast free here with an adult meal, a resort-fee perk. Compare the mai tais in the best mai tais on Oahu.
Hula Grill WaikikiIsland seafood and steak
Hula Grill Waikiki, from the same T S Restaurants group as Duke’s, is off the upper lobby with a view down the beach to Diamond Head. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily from 7 AM to 9:30 PM, with live music from 2 to 4 PM. The August 2026 dinner menu runs from the crab-topped macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi ($51) to a coconut seafood chowder ($39), and Tutu’s Moonshine arrives in a cored pineapple ($25). Dinner mains run $29 to $119. The restaurant asks only for your nicest aloha shirt. Book at (808) 923-4852 or online. It suits couples who want the view without the beach-bar crowd, and room service comes from its kitchen. Tip: the Early Eats menu, 3 to 6 PM, has $12 cocktails and a $23 burger.
Blue Note HawaiiJazz and dinner club
Blue Note Hawaii, the Waikiki branch of the New York jazz club, is on level two and books jazz, Hawaiian, R&B and comedy acts most nights. Tickets are sold online, seating is first come within your section at communal tables, and every guest has a $20 food and drink minimum. The Pacific Rim menu runs from poke nachos ($28) to braised short ribs ($52) and a lobster miso carbonara ($40); the full menu is served at the bar too. Smart casual is recommended, with no swimwear, shoes required and a layer for the air conditioning. It suits couples and music fans; the club recommends ages 10 and up. Tip: arrive when doors open for the better seats.

Around the Outrigger
International Market Place is across the street, the Royal Hawaiian Center about 5 minutes west, and the Duke statue and the Kuhio Beach hula mound about 5 minutes east; the zoo and Kapiolani Park are 15 to 20 minutes on foot. See things to do in Waikiki for the rest, and Honolulu airport to Waikiki for the ride in (the hotel allows 30 minutes to an hour). Neighbors: the Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider, Sheraton and Hyatt Regency; all of them in the best Waikiki hotels at every budget.

Could be better
You are booking into a renovation that is not finished. Outrigger says the hotel is open and fully operational, but its own resort-fee page sends the gym and the cultural classes to sister hotels for now, the club lounge is shut until January 1, 2027, and the trade press reports work continuing on the public spaces, pool area and shops.
Consider Instead
- Moana Surfrider is the finished renovation on the same central stretch: every room renovated by May 2026, the banyan courtyard and an oceanfront spa, for a $54 resort fee and $65 valet.
- The Royal Hawaiian has the full hotel running now, with a guests-only pool on the sand and daily cultural classes in its $52 resort fee, plus self-parking at $55 a day.
- Sheraton Waikiki suits families better: two connected kids’ pools, a 70-foot slide and on-site child care, for a $52 resort fee.
Tips Before You Book Outrigger Waikiki
- Skip Club until January. The lounge that makes it worth the premium reopens January 1, 2027.
- Use the museum perk. Your room key gets two people into Bishop Museum free.
- Sunday at 4 PM. Henry Kapono plays Duke’s Barefoot Bar, 4 to 6 PM.
- Sail from the sand. Ke Kai and Na Hoku 3 catamarans board on the beach in front of Duke’s.
- Hawaii ID pays half. Valet is $30 on a kamaʻaina-rate booking, or a military booking made through the Military Liaison.
