Honolulu Airport to Waikiki

Honolulu’s airport is Daniel K. Inouye International, HNL on your boarding pass. It sits west of downtown, so every ride to Waikiki crosses the whole city: past the harbor, through Kakaʻako and Ala Moana, and into Waikiki from the Hilton Hawaiian Village end.

Choose by your bags first and your group size second. The bus is cheapest per person. Once you are three or more, or you have a surfboard, a flat-rate taxi or a private van costs less than it sounds.

Prices were checked in September 2026. Bus fares rose on July 1, 2026, so older guides that say $3.00 cash or a $35 weekly pass are out of date.

The W Line is the direct bus from the airport to Waikiki. It replaced the old Routes 19 and 20, which no longer run. It makes limited stops: a few along Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard, then in Waikiki at Kahanamoku Street by the Hilton Hawaiian Village, three stops on Kuhio Avenue (at Launiu Street, Dukes Lane and Ohua Avenue) and the last at Kapahulu Avenue. Check the Waikiki map for which one is closest to your hotel.

• Fare. $3 on a HOLO card, which works as a 2-hour pass across TheBus and Skyline. The card costs $2, sold at the ticket machines on the ground level in front of the Skyline station. Cash is $3.25, exact change only, with no transfers.
• Where to board. Ground level on Ala Onaona Street by the lei stands, between Terminal 1 and the Skyline station. The permanent stop is still under construction, so follow the City Bus signs. The free Wiki Wiki shuttle links the terminals and the station from 3:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.
• Luggage. Per TheBus rules, each rider may bring one standard medium suitcase and one smaller carry-on, or one carry-on backpack. You carry both on in one trip, and they must fit under or in front of your seat, between your feet or on your lap. Two big suitcases each means a shuttle.
• Hours. The first bus leaves the airport at 4:15 a.m. every day. The last one leaves at midnight on weekdays and 1:30 a.m. on weekends.
• Time. 35 minutes to the Kapahulu end of Waikiki on a weekday afternoon, 26 to 30 minutes late at night.

Frequencies come from the W Line timetable in effect since May 31, 2026. Route 42 adds one more Waikiki-bound trip from the airport each night, at about 10:54 p.m.

No. Skyline, Honolulu’s rail line, has a station at the airport, but it runs the wrong way for Waikiki visitors. From the airport the line continues only two more stations, to Kahauiki on Middle Street in Kalihi, and ends there. The extension to downtown is scheduled for 2031, and even that will not reach Waikiki.

The W Line starts at the same airport station, so skip the train and take the bus straight in.

Roberts Hawaiʻi Express Shuttle is the airport’s official on-demand shuttle. The shared ride to Waikiki hotels is $29 a person on arrival ($26 going back), with two standard bags and one carry-on included. An extra bag is $10, a surfboard 6 feet or shorter is $40, and golf clubs count as one bag. Look for agents in yellow aloha shirts in baggage claim, or head to the pickup points outside Baggage Claim 11, between Baggage Claim 17 and International Arrivals, and at Baggage Claim 31. Reservations are (808) 439-8800. Cancel more than 24 hours out and you pay a 10% charge; inside 24 hours there is no refund.

SpeediShuttle runs shared and private vans too, but it does not publish prices, so get a quote through its booking page. On domestic arrivals, wait inside baggage claim for its greeter instead of heading out to the curb.

A shared van stops at other hotels on the way, so the ride can run well past the 25-minute drive. You are paying for a fixed price and help with the bags, not speed.

For a family or a group, a private van is often the best buy. You pay per vehicle, not per person, and the driver meets you and loads the bags. The transfer below takes up to 10 people from $80, includes an hour of free waiting after you land, and cancels free up to 24 hours out. For a first trip, there is also a private transfer with a lei greeting that includes an orchid lei for each passenger.

Taxis line up on the center median in front of each baggage claim area. The airport runs an open taxi system managed by AMPCO Express, so any company can pick up, and dispatchers in yellow shirts marked “Taxi Dispatcher” put you in the next cab. The airport does not publish a fare.

For a known price, book Charley’s Taxi. Its flat rate between the airport and Waikiki is $38 per car, one way, around the clock, for up to 5 people with one suitcase and one carry-on each. Taxes are included and the tip is not. The flat rate is Charley’s own offer, so book it ahead rather than expecting it from the first cab in line. On the meter, Charley’s charges $4.80 to start, $4.60 to $5.20 a mile, $0.75 a bag and $6 for an oversize item.

Since October 2025, every ride-app pickup is on the ground level. At Terminal 1, go to the end of Baggage Claim 6. At Terminal 2, use the median between Baggage Claims 19 and 20, or the median across from Baggage Claim 31. Lyft uses the same zones.

Uber’s own route page puts the average HNL to Waikiki fare at about $36 over the past month, for a 25-minute ride, before tip and surge. Choose an XL if you have more than a couple of suitcases.

The rental cars are on the airport. The five-story consolidated rental facility, with ten companies under one roof (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Thrifty and Sixt), sits directly across from Terminal 2. From Terminal 2 Baggage Claims 19 to 31 you can walk over. From Terminal 1, Terminal 3, International Arrivals and Baggage Claims 16 to 18, take the rental car shuttle, which runs from 4 a.m. to midnight. Counters are on Level 2.

The catch is parking. Self-parking at the big Waikiki resorts runs from $55 a night at the Royal Hawaiian and the Sheraton Waikiki to $72.25 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, and valet up to $93.19, per the hotels’ own pages in September 2026. A car that sits in the garage on your first night costs you that and the daily rate for nothing.
