Oahu Honeymoon Guide: Where to Stay and Romantic Things to Do

Oahu is the Hawaiian island for a honeymoon with good food in it. You can walk to dinner on the sand in Waikiki, spend a night at a quiet resort on the west side or the North Shore, and never change islands. Here are nine hotels for couples, the romantic things to plan around, five dinners with a view, the hotel spas and two sample plans for a romantic Hawaii getaway, checked against each hotel’s and restaurant’s own pages in September 2026.

The Short Version

Oahu Honeymoon at a Glance

  • Book these threeA sunset sail off Waikiki · Sunrise on the Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail · The 6 a.m. opening at Diamond Head
  • Best monthsSeptember to early November for the fewest visitors and the lowest hotel rates. January to March for humpback whales.
  • How many daysFive nights for one base and a getaway night. Seven for a real second base.

How we picked: every hotel below sits in one of the four areas our where to stay on Oahu guide compares, and every resort fee, package, dinner hour and spa detail comes from the business’s own site, checked in September 2026. We don’t print nightly rates or package prices. Nightly rates move with your dates, and no hotel here publishes a package price.

01

Is Oahu the Best Island in Hawaii for Couples?

Not for every couple, and it helps to know which kind you are. If you want total seclusion and one signature resort, Maui or Kauai is the easier fit, and Waikiki is the busiest hotel strip in the state. Oahu wins on nearly everything else a honeymoon runs on: a real restaurant scene beyond the hotel dining rooms, a beach town you can walk without a rental car, sunsets off Waikiki and sunrises on the east side, the widest choice of hotels, and Hawaii’s main airport at Honolulu.

It is also the easiest island to split. Spend a few nights in Waikiki, then move once to a quiet resort 35 minutes to an hour away, without a flight. Getting married on the same trip? Our guides cover the Hawaii marriage license, eloping on Oahu and Oahu wedding venues, including resorts where the ceremony and the honeymoon happen at the same address.

02

Best Place to Stay in Hawaii for Couples: 9 Oahu Hotels

Pick the area before the hotel. Waikiki puts dinner, the beach and the sunset boats within walking distance. Ko Olina, the North Shore and Kahala trade that for quiet. These are the nine hotels we’d pick for a couple, with the resort fee each one publishes as of September 2026.

Waikiki

Five hotels on or near the sand. None needs a rental car, and all of them are a walk from the sunset sails.

01 · No resort fee

Halekulani

A century-old hotel on the sand at the quiet west end of Waikiki, run for service more than scene, and the easiest date-night base on the island: House Without a Key, Orchids and La Mer, three of the dinners below, are all on the property. Its own site says there are no resort fees. Its Suite Life package adds roundtrip SUV transfers, flowers and dinner at La Mer, priced on request. Book it when the hotel is the honeymoon.

02 · The boutique sister

Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani

Halekulani’s sister hotel, which describes itself as “an upscale boutique hotel in the heart of Waikiki” with “warm, personalized service.” It sits off the beach in central Waikiki. Its offers page lists a spa-credit stay, The Art of Renewal, and nothing honeymoon-branded. The resort fee is not published; confirm it at booking. Book it for Halekulani’s service style a short walk from the sand.

03 · The Pink Palace

The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort

The pink hotel on Waikiki Beach, open since 1927, and the one Waikiki hotel we checked with its own honeymoon page. It lists a Luxury Suite Package in its oceanfront Prestige Suites, a stay-longer discount, and a daily American breakfast for two at the Surf Lanai, its oceanfront patio. None carries a published price; mention “honeymoon at the Royal Hawaiian” when you book, as the hotel asks. The resort fee is $52 a night plus tax. Book it for the postcard.

04 · First Lady of Waikiki

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Waikiki’s oldest hotel, open since 1901, built around a banyan courtyard on the sand. The couples draw is its Moana Lani Spa, where an oceanfront suite for two comes with a private whirlpool (more in the spa section below). There is no honeymoon-named package. The resort fee is $54 a night plus tax. Book it for old Waikiki and a spa day without leaving the hotel.

05 · The quiet end

Kaimana Beach Hotel

A boutique hotel on Kaimana Beach at the Diamond Head end, past Kapiolani Park, where the crowds thin out and Michel’s, one of the dinners below, shares the same stretch of sand. There is no honeymoon package; the appeal is the address. The resort fee is $45 a night. Book it for Waikiki at a slower pace.

Ko Olina

Four resorts around four calm, man-made lagoons on the west coast, 25.9 miles and about 35 minutes from Waikiki. Evenings are quiet, you’ll want a car, and the lagoons have no lifeguards. Our Ko Olina vs Waikiki comparison has the drive times, parking and fees.

06 · Wedding and honeymoon in one

Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu at Ko Olina

The resort for a couple who wants to marry and stay at the same address: 370 rooms, a freestanding wedding chapel on the grounds, and a honeymoon page that pitches the wedding day and the honeymoon as “one beautifully unbroken experience.” Honeymoon packages are priced on request at (808) 679-0079. The resort fee is not published; confirm it at booking. Overnight valet is $55. Book it for resort quiet and one address for the whole trip.

07 · A villa with a kitchen

Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club

550 villas with full kitchens and a washer and dryer, run as a Marriott Vacation Club resort. It suits a longer honeymoon where you cook some nights and eat out the rest; the Island Country Market at Ko Olina covers groceries from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. There is no honeymoon package. Marriott advertised no resort fee on its own page in June 2026; confirm at booking. Book it for space and a kitchen.

North Shore

About an hour from Waikiki, with one resort. In winter the surf is the show; in summer the water calms down for swimming.

08 · The North Shore resort

The Ritz-Carlton Oʻahu, Turtle Bay

The former Turtle Bay Resort, at the island’s northern tip in Kahuku, and the only resort on the North Shore: 450 rooms, including 42 Ocean Bungalows. It is the away-from-everything night Oahu can do without a flight, and its Nalu Spa offers couples massages. No honeymoon package appears on the hotel’s own site; travel agencies sell bundles, and those prices are theirs, not the hotel’s. The resort fee is not published; confirm it at booking. Book it for a quiet night or two.

Kahala

A quiet residential neighborhood just east of Diamond Head, 10 to 15 minutes from Waikiki, with one resort on the beach.

09 · Close to town, far from the crowd

The Kahala Hotel & Resort

The Kahala calls itself “a top destination for honeymoons and anniversaries,” and it has the pieces: a quiet beach in a residential neighborhood, a spa built around private suites, and Waikiki’s restaurants 10 to 15 minutes away. It promotes romantic itineraries but publishes no honeymoon package price. Book direct and there is no resort fee, per the hotel’s own site. Book it for the last nights of the trip.

Honeymoon Packages at Oahu’s Couples Resorts

Three of these hotels sell something honeymoon-branded: the Royal Hawaiian, the Four Seasons at Ko Olina and the Halekulani. None of them publishes a price. You ask by phone or through the booking page, and the answer depends on your dates and your room. What we can print is what each hotel offers and what it adds to the room each night, from its own pages:

Then the tax. Oahu adds 18.712% to a hotel bill, and it applies to resort fees too. When you compare a package quote with a room-only rate, compare the totals after fee and tax.

Things to Do in Honolulu for Couples, and Around the Island

Most of Oahu’s best moments for two happen at the edges of the day, and many of them are free. These are the ones we’d plan around. Each links to our full guide, so this list stays short.

Every evening

A Sunset Sail off Waikiki

Catamarans and sailboats push off Waikiki Beach in the late afternoon and come back after the sun goes down. It is the classic honeymoon evening, and the easiest one: you board on the sand. Our Waikiki sunset cruise guide compares the boats. The cruise below is a 90-minute sail from Waikiki.

Fridays, free

Fireworks Over Waikiki Beach

Hilton Hawaiian Village lists fireworks on Fridays at 7:45 p.m., free, with no reservation. Watch from the sand, or from a boat: our sunset cruise guide covers the fireworks sails.

Before breakfast

Sunrise at Makapuʻu

The paved lighthouse trail on the island’s east tip faces the sunrise over the ocean: 2 miles round trip, free parking, no reservation. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before sunrise. Our Makapuʻu Lighthouse guide has the trail. Our sunrise spots guide lists more.

Book 30 days out

Diamond Head at Opening

Take the 6 a.m. entry, the first of the day, for the coolest hike and the softest light. Visitors pay $5 each and $10 for the car. Our Diamond Head reservations guide explains the booking.

Snorkel together

Hanauma Bay

A sheltered bay on the east side, and the one snorkel stop most couples plan around. Reservations open two days ahead at 7 a.m. and go fast. Our Hanauma Bay reservations guide covers the booking, and snorkeling on Oahu covers the other spots.

A beach day over the Pali

Kailua and Lanikai

Kailua Beach Park has a lifeguard tower and a buoyed swim area. Lanikai, next door, has no public parking lots, restrooms or lifeguards, so walk or bike in. Our where to stay guide covers the windward side.

For an anniversary

Renew Your Vows on the Beach

A vow renewal with a paid officiant or photographer needs the same beach permit as a wedding, usually $20 on the sand. Our beach wedding and vow renewal permits guide explains who issues it.

From the air

A Helicopter Flight Over the Island

The splurge of the trip: an hour in the air over Oahu’s cliffs and coastline, the part of the island you can’t reach by car. The flight below runs 60 minutes, with doors off or on.

Sample Oahu Honeymoon Itineraries: 5 Days and 7 Days

Our suggested plan

An Oahu Honeymoon in 5 Days

One base in Waikiki and one getaway night. This is our suggested order, one area a day; swap days to fit your reservations.

DayBaseThe plan
1WaikikiArrive and check in. Sunset on the beach, then dinner at House Without a Key or La Mer.
2WaikikiDiamond Head at the 6 a.m. opening, a slow beach day, and a spa afternoon for two.
3Waikiki, day trip eastHanauma Bay or a Kailua and Lanikai beach day, back in town for a sunset sail.
4Ko Olina or the North ShoreMove for one night: the Four Seasons at Ko Olina (35 minutes from Waikiki) or the Ritz-Carlton at Turtle Bay (about an hour).
5HomeFly out. Ko Olina is about 30 minutes from the airport.

Our suggested plan

An Oahu Honeymoon in 7 Days

Waikiki, then a real second base, then a slow finish.

DayBaseThe plan
1–3WaikikiThe first three days above, plus one free day at your own pace.
4–5Ko Olina or the North ShoreTwo nights, not one. The North Shore in winter for the big surf, in summer for swimming; Ko Olina for the lagoons.
6–7Kahala or back to WaikikiA quiet finish at The Kahala, 10 to 15 minutes from Waikiki, with a spa afternoon and a last dinner at Michel’s or La Mer.

The 7-day plan moves twice. If you’d rather move once, stay at the second base through day 7 and fly out from there. To lay out your own days stop by stop, try our free Oahu Itinerary Builder.

Best Time for an Oahu Honeymoon

  • September to early November. In state data for 2024 and 2025, September and October had the fewest visitors on Oahu and its lowest average hotel rates, with November close behind on crowds. September is hurricane season, so book refundable or insured. Our best time to visit Oahu guide has the month-by-month numbers.
  • January to March for whales. NOAA’s humpback whale sanctuary says humpbacks are “generally seen in Hawaiʻi from November through April,” with the peak from January through March. Maui’s channels have more of them, so treat a whale on an Oahu sunset sail as a bonus. Our whale watching on Oahu guide covers the shore lookouts.
  • North Shore stays depend on the season. Hawaii Ocean Safety warns of “consistent huge and dangerous swells” on north shores in winter, roughly November to April. That is the time to watch the surf from Turtle Bay. From May to October the water flattens out, and that is the time to swim there.
09

Oahu Honeymoon Questions

Is Oahu good for a honeymoon?

Yes, for a couple who wants food, a walkable beach town and a choice of hotels. Waikiki puts dinner on the sand, sunset sails and the beach within walking distance, and a night or two at Ko Olina, the North Shore or Kahala adds quiet without changing islands. For total seclusion at one resort, Maui or Kauai is the easier fit.

Where should we stay on Oahu for a honeymoon?

Waikiki for most of the trip: the Halekulani, the Royal Hawaiian or the Moana Surfrider for the beachfront, or the Kaimana Beach Hotel at the quieter Diamond Head end. Then one or two nights somewhere quiet: the Four Seasons at Ko Olina, the Ritz-Carlton at Turtle Bay, or The Kahala.

Do Oahu hotels offer honeymoon packages?

Some do. The Royal Hawaiian and the Four Seasons at Ko Olina have honeymoon pages, and the Halekulani sells a Suite Life package with dinner at La Mer. None of them publishes a price. Ask the hotel for a quote for your dates, and add the resort fee and Oahu’s 18.712% room tax when you compare.

How many days do you need for an Oahu honeymoon?

Five nights covers one base plus a getaway night. Seven gives you two nights at a second base, such as Ko Olina or the North Shore, instead of a quick overnight.

What is the best month for a honeymoon on Oahu?

September to early November. In state data, September and October have the fewest visitors on Oahu and the lowest average hotel rates. For humpback whales, go from January to March. September is hurricane season, so book refundable or insured.

What are the most romantic things to do in Honolulu?

A sunset sail off Waikiki, dinner on the sand at House Without a Key or Michel’s, the free Friday fireworks at Hilton Hawaiian Village, an early Diamond Head hike, and sunrise from the Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail on the east side.

Can we get married and honeymoon on Oahu on the same trip?

Yes. You need a Hawaii marriage license, which costs $65; you apply online first, then meet a licensing agent. Several of the hotels here host weddings, and the Four Seasons at Ko Olina has its own chapel, so the ceremony and the honeymoon can happen at the same address.
