The Best Sunrise Spots On Oahu
Oahu’s sunrises are quieter than the sunsets. Fewer people, cooler air, and the whole island waking up. These five spots are worth setting an early alarm for.
Oahu’s sunrises are quieter than the sunsets. Fewer people, cooler air, and the whole island still half-asleep. Arrive 20 minutes early, bring water, and check the forecast the night before since clouds on the horizon can turn a good sunrise into a grey one.
Sunrise times range from around 7:00am in December and January to 5:50am in June and July. The hiking options below combine a summit reward with the sunrise. The beach options are easier but equally beautiful. For the hiking spots, check if reservations are required the week before you go.
Timing
When to Leave and What to Bring
Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before sunrise. For Diamond Head, that means leaving Waikiki by 5am in summer. For beach spots, 15 minutes early is enough. Bring layers: the pre-dawn temperature is noticeably cooler than midday, especially at elevation. Check the weather: cloud cover on the eastern horizon is the only thing that ruins a sunrise on Oahu. A clear night usually means a clear sunrise. Reservations: Diamond Head requires advance booking at gostateparks.hawaii.gov.
Best Sunrise Spots on Oahu
Diamond Head Summit Trail
The sunrise from Diamond Head’s summit is the most classic Oahu morning experience. 1.6 miles from the parking lot to the top, mostly paved, with stairs near the summit. The panorama covers Waikiki, the coastline in both directions, and the Pacific horizon where the sun appears. Reservations are required in advance at gostateparks.hawaii.gov. The crater gates open at 6am; plan your departure from Waikiki accordingly depending on the season. It is the one sunrise spot on the island worth setting a very early alarm for.
Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail
The Makapuʻu trail faces east and the summit lookout sits directly in line with the rising sun. Two miles round trip on a fully paved path, free parking, no reservation required. The lighthouse turns coral-colored in the early light, and on clear days the silhouettes of Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi are visible across the channel. In winter, arriving at sunrise also maximizes your window for whale sightings from the summit. This is the strongest option for visitors who want a sunrise hike without the Diamond Head reservation process.
Kailua Beach
Kailua Beach on the Windward Side faces northeast and catches the sunrise cleanly across a long stretch of calm sand. The Mokulua Islands appear as dark silhouettes against the orange horizon before the sun clears them. There is no elevation here, no hike, and no reservation: just a 30-minute drive from Waikiki over the Pali Highway and a beach to yourself for the first hour of the day. Bring a towel and stay for the swim. The water is calm in most conditions and the beach is one of the cleaner stretches of shoreline on the island.
Kualoa Regional Park
Kualoa faces northeast with the Koʻolau Mountains rising directly behind you and the peak of Mokoliʻi Island (Chinaman’s Hat) silhouetted against the horizon at sunrise. The park is flat, grassy, and largely empty before 8am. It is also one of the most photographed landscapes on the island from a different angle entirely: this is the valley used in Jurassic Park and dozens of other films. The combination of mountain backdrop, ocean view, and dramatic island peak makes it one of the strongest sunrise compositions on Oahu.
Banzai Pipeline / Ehukai Beach
Ehukai Beach faces northeast and the sunrise comes up over the Pacific with nothing between you and the horizon. In summer the water is calm and the beach is quiet. In winter the same beach is lined with professional photographers waiting for the Banzai Pipeline to fire at first light. Either way, the sunrise here has a different energy from the tourist-heavy spots in Honolulu. It is a working surf beach watching the ocean wake up, which is one of the better versions of an Oahu morning regardless of the season.
