Getting Around Oahu Without Guessing

Stay in Waikiki and you can do most of a first trip without a car: direct buses reach Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor and the airport for $3 a ride on a HOLO card. The rest of the island is a different story. The North Shore, Kailua and the west side take long bus rides or a car, and Skyline rail stops well short of Waikiki. Here is what each option costs, where it goes, and when to rent for a day.

The Short Answer

How to Get Around Oahu

In Waikiki and Honolulu, ride TheBus on a HOLO card and walk. For the airport and Pearl Harbor, the bus or Skyline both work. For the North Shore, the windward beaches and the west side, rent a car for those days or book a tour with pickup. Rideshare fills the gaps in town and at the airport.

01

Which Base Needs a Car

Where you sleep decides most of this. Waikiki has the island’s densest bus service; every other base trades it for quiet. Our guide to where to stay on Oahu compares the four bases in full.

BaseWithout a carOur call
WaikikiDirect buses to Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor and the airport; Biki and trolleys in townSkip the car for town days; rent for the days you leave town
Ko OlinaTwo buses stop on the highway at Aliʻinui Drive; none enters the resortFine for resort days; a car or tours to see the island
North ShoreBuses 52 and 60 reach Haleʻiwa from Ala Moana, about 1 hr 40 min or longerYou need a car
KailuaBus 67 from Ala Moana, then 671 to Kailua Beach and LanikaiDoable by bus, slow for island day trips; rent a car
02

TheBus: Fares, the HOLO Card and the App

TheBus is the island’s public bus, and one fare system covers it and Skyline. Pay cash and every ride costs $3.25 with no transfer. Tap a HOLO card instead and a $3.00 fare buys two hours on any bus or train, and the card stops charging once you have spent $7.50 in a day (TheBus fares). Credit and debit cards are not accepted on the bus.

FarePriceWhat you get
Cash, one ride$3.25Exact change, no transfer
HOLO 2-hour pass$3.00Two hours on any bus or Skyline train
HOLO day cap$7.50Rides are free after $7.50 in a day
HOLO 3-day pass$20.0072 hours from first tap
HOLO 7-day pass$45.00168 hours from first tap
HOLO card$2.00One-time card fee

Getting a HOLO Card as a Visitor

Landing at the airport? The vending machine in the Lelepaua Skyline station sells adult HOLO cards. Already in Waikiki? ABC Stores sell a card with a day pass already on it, though they do not reload cards, so top it up online or at 7-Eleven, Foodland or TIMES (HOLO for visitors). HOLO also sells 1-, 3- and 7-day passes that start on your first tap.

The App and the Luggage Rule

The city retired its DaBus2 app in April 2026 and made Transit the official app for TheBus and Skyline; it shows live arrivals plus Biki and rideshare (City and County of Honolulu). On the bus, each rider may bring one medium suitcase and one carry-on, boarded in one trip and kept under or in front of the seat or on a lap (TheBus rules). For the full airport run, see Honolulu airport to Waikiki.

03

Where TheBus Goes From Waikiki

Three of the trips visitors ask about most are one bus from Waikiki. The rest need a change at Ala Moana Center, which is fine for a day out and slow for anything on a schedule. Check times in the Transit app or on TheBus route list; the routes below are from TheBus’s own route pages and schedule data.

  • Diamond Head: routes 2 and 2L stop on Diamond Head Road by the crater entrance, but out-of-state visitors without a park reservation are turned away (Hawaii State Parks). Book it first; our Diamond Head reservations guide covers how.
  • Pearl Harbor: route 42 runs from Waikiki and pulls into the memorial’s entrance driveway on its way west. Reserve the USS Arizona program ahead; see Pearl Harbor tickets.
  • Hanauma Bay: no route serves the bay. Reserve entry and take a package with Waikiki pickup, or drive; Hanauma Bay reservations has both.
  • Old guides: routes 19 and 20 no longer run, and route 23 no longer serves Diamond Head.
04

Skyline Rail: What It Reaches, and What It Does Not

Skyline is Honolulu’s elevated train, and it is useful for exactly two visitor trips: the airport and Pearl Harbor. Since October 2025 it has run 13 stations from Kualakaʻi in East Kapolei to Kahauiki at Kalihi Transit Center, including Lelepaua station at the airport (HART). It does not reach Ala Moana or Waikiki. From the airport or the Āhua Lagoon Drive station, transfer to the W Line bus for Waikiki (DTS).

For Pearl Harbor, ride to Hālawa (Aloha Stadium), cross Kamehameha Highway and walk east to the visitor center, or take route 40, 42 or 51 one stop. The Makalapa station is named for the military base, not the memorial. Skyline needs a HOLO card (no cash), costs the same as the bus, and runs from 4 a.m. with trains every 10 minutes until 8:30 p.m. and every 15 minutes after (airport transit page). The next extension, to Civic Center downtown, is scheduled for 2031, and it still stops short of Waikiki.

05

Rideshare and Taxis

Uber and Lyft both pick up at the airport. Since October 2025, airport rideshare pickup is on the ground level: at Terminal 1 curbside by Baggage Claim 6, and at Terminal 2 on the median across from Baggage Claims 19/20 and 31 (Hawaii DOT). Uber lists its recent average from the airport to Waikiki at about $36 and 25 minutes (Uber). Taxis wait on the center median outside baggage claim; the airport post has the flat rate.

Hawaii also has a locally owned rideshare, holoholo. It covers the whole island, on demand or booked up to a year ahead, and the fare is fixed when you book, with no surge pricing. That makes it the one to schedule ahead for an airport run or an early start.

06

Rent a Car for the Days You Leave Town

The pattern that works for most Waikiki stays is a car for one or two days, not the whole trip. Use it for the North Shore, the windward coast and the west side, and skip it for town days, when parking costs more than the bus. Our guide to renting a car on Oahu covers pickup spots in Waikiki and at the airport, the add-ons to skip and which car to book, and Waikiki parking covers what hotels and garages charge.

07

Biki Bikes and the Waikiki Trolley

Biki is Honolulu’s bikeshare: about 130 stations across Waikiki, Kakaʻako, Ala Moana, downtown, Mānoa and Kaimukī, and nothing outside town. A single ride is $5 for 30 minutes, with $5.25 for each extra half hour (Biki). It suits short hops: Waikiki to Kakaʻako, the zoo or Ala Moana.

The Waikiki Trolley is a paid hop-on, hop-off sightseeing service, not transit. Its Ala Moana line is $6, the Diamond Head line $22 and the Ocean View line $35 for adults, and an all-line day pass is $64 (Waikiki Trolley). The Diamond Head ticket does not include park entry, and the Ocean View line does not stop at Hanauma Bay.

08

Planning Days Without a Car

Without a car, a week on Oahu still covers a lot. By bus from Waikiki: Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, the airport, and with one change, Haleʻiwa and the beaches at Kailua and Lanikai. Everything else is a tour with Waikiki pickup, a rideshare, or a one-day rental. Pick the days that need a car, then let the Oahu Itinerary Builder arrange the rest.

Getting Around Oahu: Questions

Can you get around Oahu without a car?

In Waikiki, yes. Direct buses reach Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor and the airport, and Biki and the trolleys cover town. The North Shore and Kailua take a change of bus at Ala Moana Center and a long ride, so most visitors rent a car or book a tour for those days.

How much is TheBus on Oahu?

$3.25 cash with exact change and no transfers, or $3.00 on a HOLO card with two hours of free transfers between buses and Skyline. HOLO stops charging once you have spent $7.50 in a day.

Where do I buy a HOLO card?

From the vending machine at any Skyline station, including the airport’s Lelepaua station, or at an ABC Store in Waikiki. ABC Stores sell cards with a day pass already on them and do not reload, so top up online or at 7-Eleven, Foodland or TIMES.

Does Skyline go to Waikiki?

No. It runs from East Kapolei to Kalihi Transit Center. From the airport or the Lagoon Drive station, transfer to the W Line bus for Waikiki.

Can I take a suitcase on TheBus?

One medium suitcase and one carry-on, boarded in one trip and kept under or in front of your seat or on your lap. Skyline trains have luggage racks.

What app should I use for TheBus?

Transit. The city made it the official app for TheBus and Skyline when it retired DaBus2 in April 2026. It also shows Biki and rideshare.

Can I take the bus to Hanauma Bay?

No route serves the bay entrance. Book the bay’s reservation and use a package with Waikiki pickup, or drive.

Is there Uber at Honolulu airport?

Yes. Rideshare pickup is on the ground level: at Terminal 1 curbside by Baggage Claim 6, and at Terminal 2 on the median across from Baggage Claims 19/20 and 31. Uber lists about $36 and 25 minutes to Waikiki as its recent average.
