The 30-second verdict
Book White Sands for a small, fun, walkable base with a pool bar and a $30 fee that covers beach chairs and boogie boards. Skip it if you want an ocean view, a gym or a spa, or a quiet pool: the courtyard is also the bar.

Known for
The retro courtyard
A 1957 walk-up built around a pool, with Heyday’s swing seats at a bamboo bar on one side and the Green Lady Cocktail Room hidden behind a door marked 8.
Rooms
White Sands went up in 1957 and was reworked by Springboard Hospitality, which owns and runs it; the pool bar opened in June 2021. Every room opens onto an outdoor corridor with a private lanai. Standard rooms are 316 square feet with a mini-fridge, microwave, kettle and AC. Tradewind rooms face the garden or city, Pool View rooms the courtyard, and ground-floor Poolside rooms step out to the water. Two-bed rooms are two full beds, not queens.
The Bungalow Suite
There is one suite type, the One Bedroom Bungalow Suite: 480 square feet, a king in its own bedroom, a sleeper sofa, a Nespresso machine and a bamboo lanai over the pool. It sleeps four. Connecting rooms for up to eight are available on request.
The Pool and Courtyard
The courtyard is the hotel: a pool with a sundeck, a grotto hot tub, a koi pond and waterfall, and cold oshibori towels, open 9 AM to 9 PM. Heyday’s bar sits right beside it, so the pool is social rather than calm, especially on music nights. There are no cabanas and no adults-only area. Guests get poolside yoga or a core class on Saturday mornings.
Getting to the Beach
Walk down to Kalakaua and you reach Kuhio Beach by the Duke Kahanamoku statue in about 5 to 8 minutes, with city lifeguard towers along the park. The walled Kuhio swim basin is generally calm and shallow, and the hotel itself points families there. The state plans sand work on those basins starting in fall 2026, so expect equipment or fencing on part of the beach. Beach chairs and boogie boards come with the amenity fee, so skip the beach stands; umbrellas are not on the list. Waikiki’s beaches, section by section covers the rest.

What the $30 Fee Covers
Wi-Fi, beach chairs and boogie boards, GoPro and power bank loans, lobby coffee and popcorn, Saturday yoga, and a free two-hour board rental after a paid lesson with Kai Sallas Pro Surf School (compare schools in our Waikiki surf lessons guide). The lists differ slightly from page to page, so confirm the current inclusions at check-in.
Heyday, Green Lady and the Café
Heyday is the open-air pool bar and restaurant: swing seats, pupu platters and tropical drinks, with happy hour from noon to 6 PM and food from 3 PM. Through a door hidden in a bamboo wall, the Green Lady Cocktail Room pours its house mai tai from 8 PM to 1 AM, walk-ins only; ask for Room 8. Mornings are Sands Café, grab-and-go coffee, pastries and breakfast burritos at the front desk from 6 AM to noon. For more drinks, see the best mai tais on Oahu.
Around White Sands
International Market Place is about 5 minutes away on foot and the Royal Hawaiian Center about 7; the Ala Wai Canal path is at the end of the street. The free Kuhio Beach hula show runs Saturdays and the first and third Tuesdays at 6:30 PM. The airport is about 9 miles off; see Honolulu airport to Waikiki. Comparing? The Hyatt Centric Waikiki is the newer chain option a few blocks west, the rest of the small hotels are in our boutique hotels guide, and the best Waikiki hotels at every budget lines up the big ones.

Could be better
Space. Standard rooms are 316 square feet, the two-bed rooms are two full beds rather than queens, and the hotel says rollaways fit only ground-floor rooms, with air beds upstairs. A family of four should book the Bungalow Suite or connecting rooms rather than squeeze into one room.
Consider Instead
- Wayfinder Waikiki is the pick for a quieter street on the canal and a bigger pool: 70 feet of saltwater with a hot tub, for a $37 amenity fee. Guests must be 21 to check in.
- Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club suits families and groups who need space: its two and three bedroom suites sleep six and eight, and a direct booking carries no amenity fee.
- Kaimana Beach Hotel is the choice if the ocean matters more than the pool: a small hotel on the sand at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki, with a lifeguarded beach and the Hau Tree restaurant.
Tips Before You Book White Sands Hotel
- Pick the room for the noise. Poolside rooms are in the action; Tradewind rooms face the garden or city.
- Leave the beach rental money. Chairs and boogie boards come with the $30 fee.
- Ask for Room 8. The Green Lady opens at 8 PM and takes walk-ins only.
- Eat lunch out. Heyday’s happy hour starts at noon, but its food starts at 3 PM.
- Book ground floor for a rollaway. Upper floors get air beds instead.
