The Best Food On Oahu
Oahu’s food scene runs from $3 spam musubi at a gas station to $118 oceanfront brunch with Diamond Head views. This guide covers the best of both ends, plus the food trucks, plate lunch counters, and coffee shops worth planning around.
Plate lunch and local food. Hawaiian plate lunch is the island’s default meal: two scoops of rice, macaroni salad, and a protein. Kalua pig, teriyaki beef, and loco moco are the standards. Spam musubi costs $3 to $4 at virtually every convenience store on the island and is worth trying at least once. Poke bowls originated here, and the local versions at fish markets are significantly better than anything available on the mainland.
Food trucks. The North Shore has the most concentrated stretch: Giovanni’s shrimp truck near Kahuku, Macky’s, and a rotating lineup of trucks along Kamehameha Highway. Waikiki has trucks near Kapiolani Park. The Kakaako neighborhood between downtown Honolulu and Waikiki hosts a Friday night street market with a reliable food vendor mix.
Fine dining and brunch. A handful of hotel properties run standout meals: the Halekulani, the Kahala Hotel, and a few spots at Sheraton Waikiki and the Royal Hawaiian. Reservations fill 30 to 90 days ahead, especially during winter peak season. For a special occasion meal with a view, the options here are genuinely excellent.

Eating on Oahu: What to Watch For
Tipping. Standard 18 to 20% at restaurants. Hawaii has one of the highest costs of living in the US. Servers depend on tips. Round up.
Reservations. Top dining spots book 30 to 90 days ahead, especially during peak winter season (December through March). If you want a specific restaurant, book before you land.
Spam isn’t a joke. Hawaii eats more spam per capita than anywhere else in the US. Spam musubi (spam on rice, wrapped in nori) is a legitimate local food, not a tourist gimmick. It’s worth eating.
Plate lunch portions. A standard plate lunch is large. One order is a reasonable shared meal for two people, especially if you want to try more than one spot.
Food truck tips. A few dollars in the tip jar at the North Shore shrimp trucks is appropriate. The lines are long, the work is hot, and most of these operations are family-run.

Orchids Sunday Sparkling Brunch at the Halekulani Hotel
The Halekulani’s Sunday brunch at Orchids is the strongest single-meal case you can make on Oahu. The setting is oceanfront with Diamond Head views. The spread covers nearly every food category: a shellfish station with freshly shucked oysters and snow crab legs; a carving station with prime rib, Waimanalo raised suckling pig, and sage turkey; a made-to-order sushi bar; poke and sashimi; eggs Benedict; waffles; and Halekulani’s own pastries, including the signature popovers with poha berry jam. Two glasses of prosecco, mimosas, or Kir cocktail are included in the price. The cost is real. So is the quality.
How much does it cost?
$118 for adults, $61 for children. Two glasses of sparkling wine or cocktail are included. Valet parking is complimentary for restaurant guests.
What is the dress code?
Casual resort attire for brunch. T-shirts, tank tops, beachwear, exercise attire, and flip-flops are not permitted.
Do I need a reservation?
Yes. Reservations are highly recommended. For peak holidays like Christmas and Mother’s Day, they fill more than a year in advance. Brunch runs Sunday 9:30am to 2:30pm, with limited seating for large groups.
What to order first
The snow crab legs, the suckling pig, and the house-made sorbets all hold up through the meal. The Halekulani Mai Tai is their signature cocktail and worth ordering alongside the included sparkling wine.
