The 30-second verdict
The Kaimana Beach Hotel is our pick for the best boutique hotel on Oahu: a small hotel on the sand at the quiet Diamond Head end of Waikiki, with a lifeguarded beach and the Hau Tree restaurant. The trade-offs are no pool, valet-only parking and small entry rooms.

Known for
The Hau Tree
The restaurant sits on the beach under the hau grove that gives it its name. Robert Louis Stevenson stayed at the Sans Souci, the hotel that stood on this ground, in 1893.
Rooms
Seven room types run from 205 square feet for the Classic Queen and Ocean View Queen to 420 for the Ocean View Signature King. Every room has a private lanai, a mini fridge and Wi-Fi; coffee makers come on request. The Park View Kings face the palms of Kaimana Beach Park from the Park Wing, a walk-up on floors 2 and 3 with no elevator. There are no kitchens.

Suites
Two junior suites, oceanfront or Diamond Head view, add a sofa bed and sleep four. The Classic 1-Bedroom Suite in the Park Wing has a wet bar with a microwave. The top suites sit on the ninth floor: the Signature 1-Bedroom at 742 square feet and the Kaimana 1-Bedroom at 1,045, with wraparound lanais and 12-foot windows.
Pool, Spa and Gym
There is no pool, spa or fitness room. The hotel sits on the sand, so the ocean is the pool; there is an on-site salon, and yoga is part of the resort fee.
Beach Access
The hotel sits on Kaimana Beach, also called Sans Souci. A wide reef keeps the near water shallow and calm, and city lifeguard tower 2H is staffed 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Chairs, towels and reef-safe sunscreen come with the resort fee. Hawaiian monk seals haul out here; Kaiwi gave birth on this beach in May 2026. Stay 50 feet from any seal and 150 from a mother and pup, and check ocean conditions before you swim.

Activities
The $45 fee covers more than most: stand-up paddleboards, cruiser bikes, yoga, weekly stargazing, and intro hula and lei-making classes. Kai Sallas’ Pro Surf School works from the hotel, with lessons at extra cost (compare surf lessons in Waikiki). On Sundays, live music plays at the oceanfront bar from 2 to 4:30 p.m. There is no kids club.

Restaurants and Bars
The Kaimana has one restaurant, and it is a reason to stay here: Hau Tree, on the sand and open to non-guests, which the hotel says won Honolulu Magazine Hale ʻAina gold for outdoor dining in 2021 and 2023. A coffee bar covers the early mornings, and on Saturdays the hotel hosts Muʻu & Mimosas, an afternoon tea party with Hobbs Tea from Kauai; reserve ahead.
Hau TreeBeachfront brunch and dinner
Hau Tree serves a casual, beach-centric menu at open-air tables on Kaimana Beach, under the hau grove. Brunch runs daily from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (7:30 on weekends), pau hana 2 to 5 p.m., and dinner 5 to 9 p.m. At brunch, share the pastry board ($19) and order the Hau Tree eggs benedict ($28); at dinner, the seared local fish ($42) or Kauai prawn strozzapreti ($36). Dinner entrees run $37 to $75. Book on OpenTable or at (808) 921-7066; diners get free valet. It suits couples and anyone after a beach brunch away from Kalakaua. Tip: pau hana cocktails are $13 and Maui Brewing beers $6, with live music Sundays from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Sunset ProvisionsCoffee bar and island shop
Sunset Provisions, just outside the lobby, is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It pours Kaimana Coffee Co. espresso drinks, from a Honey Girl latte to an ube matcha, and sells croissants, banana bread, overnight oats and an Italian sandwich to take to the beach, alongside swimwear and goods from Hawaii makers. Rooms have coffee makers only on request, so this is the morning stop. Room service is ordered through the front desk.
Around the Hotel
Kapiolani Park is across the street, the Natatorium war memorial is next door, and the Waikiki Aquarium and Honolulu Zoo are a short walk. Kuhio Beach and the Duke statue are about a mile west (see our Waikiki map). Diamond Head needs a reservation for visitors from out of state. For other small hotels nearby, see boutique hotels on Oahu.

Could be better
No pool, no gym and no spa. For some guests that is the point: the beach is right there and the fee covers the gear. But families who want a pool afternoon, or anyone who wants a treadmill or a massage on site, will need to look elsewhere.
Consider Instead
- ʻAlohilani Resort is the pick at the same Diamond Head end for a pool and a spa: a saltwater infinity pool, Spa Uʻilani and free daily fitness classes, across Kalakaua from Kuhio Beach. Its $54 resort fee comes with extra carbon, tree and card fees.
- Hyatt Regency Waikiki suits families nearby: the walled Kuhio swim basin is across the street, and the $55 resort fee covers beach chairs, beach toys and daily lei, hula and ukulele classes.
Tips Before You Book the Kaimana
- Driving? Look for the hotel’s valet-included offer; otherwise valet is $55 a night plus tax.
- Mind the stairs. The Park View King and Classic 1-Bedroom Suite are in the Park Wing, which has no elevator.
- Book the extra night. Early check-in and late check-out are guaranteed only that way.
- Ask for a coffee maker. They come on request; Sunset Provisions opens at 6:30 a.m.
- Ride the free bikes. The cruisers cover the mile into central Waikiki or a loop of Kapiolani Park.
