Most of the 453 rooms and suites have some ocean view, all in the hotel’s “seven shades of white.” Standard rooms run 419 to 485 square feet, and each has a private balcony, a deep soaking tub with a separate shower (the Partial Ocean View description leaves the tub out) and a Nespresso machine. Oceanfront rooms look over the Orchid Pool to the water; Diamond Head Oceanfront rooms face the crater. Up to four people can share a room, but each guest 18 or older past two adds $180 a night.

Junior suites add a sitting area with a bay window and a second balcony, and the Poolside Suite opens onto the pool courtyard. The Premier Suites include the Vera Wang-designed Halekulani Suite and, since July 2025, The Penthouse and The Bungalow. They come with a butler, in-room check-in, airport transfers and kitchen facilities with a full bar.

The hotel’s calling card is a heated oval, 82 feet long, with a Cattleya orchid on the floor made from 1.2 million glass tiles. It runs 6:30 a.m. to sunset for registered guests only. Seats are first come, and staff will not hold empty chairs. There is no lifeguard, no slide and no cabana rental, and toys and diving are not allowed. Look for the one yellow umbrella among the white ones, a hotel tradition.

The spa reopened in August 2024 after a redesign. Three private suites each have an outdoor cabana, including a couples suite with a Japanese furo bath. Five more treatment rooms, a skin care suite and a salon open to the public round it out. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

The hotel fronts Grey’s Beach, known in Hawaiian as Kawehewehe, a reef entrance once visited for its healing springs. Today it is the thinnest stretch of sand in Waikiki, and the city lists no lifeguard tower here; the nearest is at the Moana, about half a mile east. There is no kids club; the hotel is built for grown-up downtime. Its “For You, Everything” program gives guests free admission to Bishop Museum, Iolani Palace, the Honolulu Museum of Art and Shangri La, arranged through the concierge. SurfHalekulani teaches private surf and paddleboard lessons, and the fitness studio runs free classes, including a morning stretch on the beach. Evenings bring Hawaiian music at House Without A Key and jazz at Lewers Lounge.

La Mer is the formal room, French cooking with ocean views, Tuesday to Saturday, for adults and children 8 and older. Orchids serves coastal Italian all day and a Sunday brunch that makes our list of the best food on Oahu. House Without A Key handles breakfast, lunch and sunset, and Earl’s pool bar pours one of the best mai tais on Oahu. After dinner, Lewers Lounge has jazz nightly. La Mer, Orchids at dinner and Lewers Lounge want collared shirts and closed-toe shoes.

Fort DeRussy is next door, and the Royal Hawaiian Center is about a 7-minute walk. Kuhio Beach and the Duke Kahanamoku statue are about 13 minutes east. • Early flight or late checkout? The Hospitality Suite has lockers and showers for guests before check-in and after check-out.
• Beat the sunset crowd. The House Without A Key lawn and hula show take no reservations; arrive before sunset, or book dinner for a table.
• Claim a pool seat early. Seating opens at 6:30 a.m., and staff will not hold towels on empty chairs.
• Use the museum pass. Book the free Bishop Museum, Iolani Palace and Shangri La visits through the concierge.
• Bring a physical card. Mobile payments are not accepted anywhere on property.
