Things to Do in Kapolei: Oahu’s Second City, Beyond Ko Olina

Kapolei is where the H-1 ends, 26 miles west of Waikīkī, and the city Honolulu designated in 1977 as Oʻahu’s secondary urban center. It is a car town with a water park, a zip-line crater, a vintage train, two malls and the west end of Skyline, and Ko Olina’s lagoons are four miles away. Here is what is open, what it costs and who should sleep here.

Quick Answer

Kapolei is a car-based second city, not a resort. Go for Wet’n’Wild Hawaii ($66.99 adults, open mostly Friday to Sunday this fall), Coral Crater zip lines, the Hawaiian Railway train, Don Don Donki and Costco. Skyline starts here and reaches the airport in 29 minutes. Swim in Ko Olina, 4 miles away. Sleep in Kapolei only if a car and a lower-key base suit your trip.

Kapolei in One Map

The Star-Advertiser records that Kapolei was designated Oʻahu’s secondary urban center in 1977 (Star-Advertiser, 2016), which is why it has a government center, a regional mall and a train station instead of a beach. Almost everything below sits within 10 minutes of Kapolei Commons, at 4450 Kapolei Parkway. The distances in the table are our own driving routes with no traffic, run in October 2026; Ko Olina quotes 35 minutes to Waikīkī (koolina.com). The slow direction is east on a weekday morning: OahuMPO, the island’s transportation planning agency, lists the H-1 between Kapolei and Pearl City in the morning peak among its least reliable stretches (OahuMPO).

Wet’n’Wild, Coral Crater and the Train

Wet’n’Wild Hawaii sits at 400 Farrington Highway, where the H-1 turns into Farrington. It opened in 1999 as Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park and became Wet’n’Wild in 2009 (Wikipedia); Hawaiian Waters is now the name of its wave pool (the park). It is open, but on an off-season calendar. The park’s hours page shows it closed October 19 to 22 and October 26 to 29, open Friday to Sunday, usually 10:30 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m., so check the date before you drive out.

General admission is $66.99, junior and senior $54.99, and children 2 and under are free; kamaʻāina prices start at $37.99, and buying 72 hours ahead takes 10 percent off general admission. Prices are before tax, and parking is $22 a vehicle (park site, directions). Chief’s Luau runs on the same grounds, 5:30 to about 8 p.m., with the Paradise Experience at $182 for adults including tax (luau page). Its pages give no days and disagree on parking and transport fees (transport page), so confirm when you book.

Coral Crater Adventure Park is a few minutes away at 91-1780 Midway Street, set below street level in a crater (Hawaii News Now, April 2026). Its own site lists a three-line zip or six-line course from $99, two-seat ATVs from $129 and an 18-challenge aerial course from $59.99 (Coral Crater, October 2026). The zip card is below.

Hawaiian Railway Society runs a narrated two-hour ride on 6.5 miles of restored track from ʻEwa to Kahe Point, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The standard ride is $20, with a snack stop in Ko Olina on every ride except Sunday at 1 p.m. (society site). The yard is at 91-1001 Renton Road, 3.8 miles from Kapolei Commons by our routing.

Shopping and Groceries: Donki, Costco and Two Malls

Don Don Donki at 500 Kamokila Boulevard opened February 15, 2025 as the first of its kind in Hawaiʻi (Hawaii News Now). Honolulu Magazine calls it a 100,000-square-foot superstore (June 2025). It is open 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily (store page). That makes it the easy stop after a late flight. Costco Kapolei, 4589 Kapolei Parkway, is a membership warehouse open 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays and 10 to 6 on Sunday for Gold Star members, with gas from 5 a.m. (Costco).

Kapolei Commons has Target, Ross, Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, Ulta Beauty and the Regal Kapolei Commons 12 (directory), whose recliner seats were Hawaiʻi’s first (Commons). Ka Makana Aliʻi, the 91-5431 Kapolei Parkway regional mall, adds more than 100 shops and restaurants including Macy’s, H&M and a movie theater, with free parking (center).

Where to Eat in Kapolei

Every restaurant here is on its operator’s own page today. Mensho, a Michelin-recognized ramen shop that opened this year, added lunch in September; its signature bowl, with A5 wagyu chashu, is $28, and there are no reservations (Aloha State Daily, October 2). Kapolei Commons lists 19 places to eat (Commons). For Ko Olina’s options, including Monkeypod Kitchen and Roy’s, see the Ko Olina guide.

Skyline Starts Here

The west end of Honolulu’s rail line is Kualakaʻi (East Kapolei) station, at 91-3253 Kualakaʻi Parkway. A train runs end to end, to Kalihi Transit Center, in about 34 minutes (City schedule), and the airport station is 29 minutes from East Kapolei (City station pages). Trains run 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, every 10 minutes until 8:30 p.m.; a HOLO card is required, at $3 for a two-hour pass or a $7.50 daily cap (fares).

Keoneʻae station at UH West Oʻahu has a free 304-stall park-and-ride. Ka Makana Aliʻi tells Skyline riders to get off at Keoneʻae and take TheBus, Routes 41, 44 and 47 (center bus page). Skyline does not reach Waikīkī or Ko Olina. It does reach Pearl Harbor: from Hālawa station, walk east to the visitor center (City). Our Skyline guide covers all 13 stations, and getting around Oahu compares the bus, rail and a car.

Next Door: Ko Olina

Kapolei has no resort beach, which is why most visitors head four miles west to Ko Olina. Each of its four lagoons has a free public lot, open sunrise to sunset, first come, first served, and there is no street parking inside the resort (koolina.com). Our Ko Olina guide covers the lagoons, lots, luaus and restaurants, and Ko Olina vs Waikīkī compares the two bases. For golf, Ko Olina Golf Club is at 92-1220 Aliʻinui Drive (club); the golf guides come in January.

Who Should Stay in Kapolei, and Who Should Not

Stay in Kapolei if you are visiting family or working in West Oʻahu, want the water park, Coral Crater and Costco inside 10 minutes, or have a 4 a.m. Skyline ride to the airport.

Skip it if you want a beach out the door or a walk to dinner: book Waikīkī, or Ko Olina for lagoons. Where to stay on Oahu compares all four bases, and Ko Olina vs Waikīkī goes deeper on the other two.
