Choosing an Island · Hawaii
Which Hawaiian Island Is Right for You?
For a first trip, Oahu gives you the most for the least: the state’s main gateway airport, the lowest average hotel rate of the four big islands, and Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and the North Shore within about an hour of each other. It is also a real city with the most visitors per square mile. If you want a resort week built around scenery, Maui wins. For remote nature, Kauai does. For volcanoes, nothing beats the Big Island. Here is how they compare, on the state’s own numbers.

The Short Answer
Pick Your Island in One Pass
Oahu for a first trip, the most variety and the lowest hotel rates. Maui for resorts, Haleakalā and the Road to Hāna. Kauai for cliffs, canyons and fewer people, once its parks reopen. The Big Island for volcanoes and the most room to roam.
The Four Islands at a Glance
The numbers below come from the state: land area and residents from the Data Book, visitors and hotel rates from DBEDT’s 2025 statistics and its August 2026 hotel report (hotel report, visitor statistics). Maui’s hotel rate is for Maui County, which includes Lanai and Molokai. Visitors per square mile is our own math from the state’s average daily visitor count.
| Oahu | Maui | Kauai | Big Island | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Known as | The Heart of Hawaiʻi | The Valley Isle | The Garden Isle | The youngest, largest island |
| Main airport | Honolulu (HNL) | Kahului (OGG) | Līhuʻe (LIH) | Kona (KOA), Hilo (ITO) |
| Land area | 598 sq mi | 772 sq mi | 552 sq mi | 4,028 sq mi |
| Visitors, 2025 | 5.68 million | 2.52 million | 1.42 million | 1.75 million |
| Avg hotel rate, Jan to Aug 2026 | $284 | $548 (Maui County) | $436 | $476 |
| Visitors per sq mi, avg day | 181 | 70 | 52 | 9 |
| Need a car? | Not in Waikiki; yes beyond it | Yes, to explore | Yes; buses are limited | Yes, the state recommends one |
| Flight from Honolulu | n/a | 30 min | 30 min | 45 to 50 min |
Read the crowd row with care. Oahu has by far the most visitors per square mile, but it also has a million residents, so visitors are a smaller share of the people around you than on any other island. It feels like a city with beaches, not a resort island.

Oahu vs Maui
This is the most common choice, and the two islands do different jobs. Oahu is Honolulu, Waikiki and Pearl Harbor, with the North Shore about an hour away; gohawaii calls it “perfect for solo trips, families, couples and adventure seekers.” Maui is resorts and scenery: Kāʻanapali and Wailea, Haleakalā’s summit crater and the rainforest drive to Hāna (gohawaii).
Maui costs more. Maui County’s average hotel rate from January to August 2026 was $547.54 a night, almost twice Oahu’s $283.83, and Maui visitors spend more per person per day. Sunrise at Haleakalā needs a $1 reservation per car for 3 to 7 a.m., released up to 60 days ahead, plus the park’s entrance fee (National Park Service). Pick Maui for a resort week built around the landscape. Pick Oahu if you want more to do within an hour of your hotel, a walkable base, or a smaller bill.
Oahu vs Kauai
Kauai is the quiet one. It is smaller than Oahu, with the fewest residents and the fewest visitors of the four big islands, and its draw is the landscape: the Nāpali Coast, Waimea Canyon, waterfalls and forest (gohawaii). One main highway runs most of the way around the island, and the Nāpali Coast is the gap it cannot close.
As of October 2026: after Hurricane Lowell in September 2026, the state closed the parks that hold Kauai’s biggest sights, including Nāpali, Waimea Canyon, Kōkeʻe and Hāʻena, with no reopening date announced. Most hotels and businesses have reopened. Check DLNR’s Kauai parks page before you book.
Pick Kauai for hiking, scenery and fewer people, once those parks reopen. Pick Oahu for nightlife, food, history and a mix of city and beach days.
Oahu vs the Big Island
The Big Island is larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, and it has the one thing no other island can match: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, which takes in the summits of Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, two of the world’s most active volcanoes (National Park Service). Lava is visible only during an eruption, so check the USGS Kīlauea page the week you go rather than counting on it.
It is also the island where you drive the most. Kona and Hilo sit on opposite sides, and the state’s visitor site recommends a rental car booked before you arrive. Pick the Big Island for volcanoes and variety of landscape. Pick Oahu if you would rather spend the week doing things than driving between them.
What About Lanai and Molokai?
Lanai is a short, high-end add-on: the island has about 330 visitor units, nearly all in three hotels, and visitors there spend more per day than on any other island. You reach it by commuter flight or by ferry from Māʻalaea on Maui (Expeditions ferry). Molokai is the opposite: no hotels in the state’s classification, a few condo resorts and rentals, and the fewest visitors of any island. It suits a quiet, culture-first trip for travelers who do not need resort services. Both islands are reached by commuter flights of 20 to 25 minutes from Honolulu.
Island Hopping: Flights, Ferries and How Many Islands
You fly between islands. Hawaiian Airlines, now part of Alaska Airlines, and Southwest both fly from Honolulu to Maui, Kauai, Kona and Hilo (Southwest), and the flights take 30 to 50 minutes in the air. The state’s visitor site says to arrive 90 minutes early, so a hop costs most of a day (gohawaii). There is no ferry from Oahu to any other island.
That travel day is the real cost of a second island. Visitors to each of the big islands stay about a week on average, so a two-island trip works best at 10 days or more, with at least four nights on each. Our guide to how many days to spend on Oahu helps you size the Oahu half.

If You Pick Oahu
Start with the Oahu Map, which explains the island’s six regions and how the weather and surf change from side to side. Then browse things to do in Oahu, choose a base with where to stay on Oahu, and read getting around Oahu before you decide on a car. When you know what you want to see, the Oahu Itinerary Builder turns it into days.
Choosing a Hawaiian Island: Questions
How many islands are in Hawaii?
Hawaii has eight main islands, and six of them take visitors: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii Island (the Big Island), Lanai and Molokai. Count every named islet and atoll and the state’s Data Book lists 137 in the archipelago, 132 of them inside the state, which matches the USGS count of 132 islands, reefs and shoals.
Which Hawaiian island is best for a first trip?
For most first trips, Oahu: the state’s main gateway airport, the lowest average hotel rate of the four big islands, and Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head and the North Shore within about an hour of each other. Pick Maui for a resort-and-scenery trip, Kauai for remote nature, and the Big Island for volcanoes.
Which Hawaiian island is cheapest?
Oahu, on the state’s numbers. Its average hotel rate for January to August 2026 was $283.83 a night, against $436.32 on Kauai, $476.49 on the Big Island and $547.54 in Maui County, and its visitors spend the least per person per day.
Can you see two islands in a week?
Yes, if you give each at least a few nights. Flights between Honolulu and Maui, Kauai or the Big Island take 30 to 50 minutes in the air, but the state’s visitor site says to arrive 90 minutes early, so a hop costs most of a day.
Is there a ferry between the Hawaiian islands?
Not from Oahu. The only passenger ferry between islands runs from Māʻalaea on Maui to Lanai. To reach any other island from Oahu you fly, or take a week-long cruise from Honolulu.
