The 30-second verdict

La Mer is the Waikiki dinner for an anniversary or a proposal: French tasting menus built on Hawaii farms, a 5:30 seating timed to the sunset, and 2026 AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five Star ratings. Budget $265 a person before wine, pack long pants, and book a Tuesday to Saturday.

Known for

The tasting menus and the Five Diamond streak

The hotel calls La Mer Hawaii’s longest consecutive AAA Five Diamond restaurant. Executive Chef Alexandre Trancher, in Hawaii since 2012, writes two set menus: the Menu du Soir and the Menu Dégustation.

2

What to Order

The Menu du Soir ($265, wine pairing $135) runs from a chilled cucumber gelée with local kampachi, sea urchin and caviar to crisp amadai and a roasted duck fillet with star anise rhubarb. The Menu Dégustation ($340, pairings $175 or $600) adds duck foie gras, seared scallop with caviar, poached abalone with Maui onion, Maine lobster in a coconut anchovy sauce and a beef filet Rossini. Upgrade dessert to the vanilla soufflé (+$12) or the cheese cart (+$25). Not eating meat? The five garden vegetable plates ($48 to $62) include a five-way carrot study. Caviar service runs $500 to $650.

Prices from the La Mer dinner menu of Aug 13, 2026, before tax and gratuity.

3

The Room and the Sunset

The hotel describes the room as tranquil and refined, with views of the Pacific. The first seating is 5:30 PM, and in early November the sun sets around 5:55, so an early table catches it. L’Aperitif, the cocktail bar inside La Mer, pours French spirits for guests 21 and over. After dinner, Lewers Lounge downstairs has jazz, and House Without a Key has hula on the lawn until 8:30. For the rest of the hotel, see our Halekulani review.

Getting There and Parking

La Mer is in the Halekulani, 2199 Kalia Road, on the Fort DeRussy end of Waikiki, about 7 minutes on foot from the Royal Hawaiian Center. The hotel validates its valet or self-parking for restaurant guests (hours not published), and the Hale Koa garage next door charges the public $10 for the first hour. Our Waikiki parking guide has the rest.

Could be better

It keeps a short week. La Mer serves dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday, with the last seating at 8:30 PM, so a stay that lands on a Sunday and Monday, or a late flight in, misses it entirely. Book it before you book the rest of the trip.

7

Consider Instead

  • Michel’s at the Colony Surf is the French dinner for a Sunday or Monday, when La Mer is closed: it opens seven nights at 5 PM on Kaimana Beach, with tableside service, a $130 tasting menu and a smart-casual code that allows dark jeans.
  • Orchids is the Halekulani pick for families and a smaller bill: keiki menus for 10 and under, dinner mains $49 to $76, and an oceanfront room with Diamond Head out the window.
  • 53 By The Sea suits a special occasion at a lower entry price: tasting menus from $110, windows on Waikiki and Diamond Head, and a dressy casual code. It is closed Monday and Tuesday.
