Mālama Hawaiʻi Makers Market runs six Oʻahu markets this season, from October 24 at Ala Moana Center to December 12 in Haleʻiwa. This guide has every date and venue, checked against the market’s calendar on October 13, plus the other Oʻahu craft fairs in the same weeks.

Quick Answer

Mālama Hawaiʻi Makers Market has six Oʻahu dates: Ala Moana Center on Oct 24 and Nov 14, Hawaiʻi Kai on Nov 7 and Dec 5, a Black Friday market at the Ala Moana Hotel on Nov 27, and Haleʻiwa on Dec 12. The two biggest other fairs share the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall: the Islandwide expo (Nov 27 to 29) and the Mele Kalikimaka Marketplace (Dec 12 and 13).

The Mālama Hawaiʻi Makers Market

Mālama Hawaiʻi Makers Market is a pop-up marketplace of local artists, makers, designers, collectors and food vendors, founded in 2019. Its About page says it now supports nearly 150 local businesses a month. Vendors are curated: the vendor application page says booths go to makers chosen for the quality of what they sell, and approved vendors get a link to register and pay. Mālama means to care for or preserve; the stated mission is a gathering place for small Hawaiʻi businesses.

On Oʻahu that means four sites this season: mall level 2 at Ala Moana Center, the lawn at Koko Head Elementary School in Hawaiʻi Kai, a Black Friday market at the Ala Moana Hotel, and one date at the Waialua Community Association in Haleʻiwa. It announced the season on Instagram on October 5.

The six Oʻahu dates on the market’s own calendar, each checked against its event page on October 13. The contact page places the Ala Moana Center market near Target.

Sat, Dec 12Haleʻiwa Town Market9 a.m. to 2 p.m.Waialua Community Association, 66-434 Kamehameha Highway

Hawaiʻi Kai markets fall on the first Saturday of the month, and the About page puts Ala Moana Center on the second and fourth Saturdays. As of October 13 the calendar posts no Ala Moana Center date after November 14 and one Haleʻiwa date, December 12, so recheck it before you plan a late-December visit around either.

One discrepancy: the About page still lists Ala Moana Center hours as 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., while every dated event page says 10 a.m. The table follows the event pages.

Weather can move a date: the August 1 Hawaiʻi Kai market was cancelled for wind, with a note rescheduling it to August 15. Check the calendar the morning you go.

Which Mālama Market to Pick

Ala Moana Center is 1.9 miles and about 6 minutes from Waikīkī (our measurement, free-flowing roads), inside the mall, and the longest Mālama market of the season at six hours. It is the simplest choice for a Waikīkī stay, and it is the Ala Moana makers market. The Black Friday market at the Ala Moana Hotel is 1.5 miles away and runs once, November 27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hawaiʻi Kai is 10.1 miles and about 23 minutes out, on a school lawn, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you are already driving east, our East Side Oahu drive runs from Waikīkī to Makapuʻu and Waimānalo.

Haleʻiwa is 33.8 miles and about 57 minutes away and has the single date, December 12, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Make it the first stop of a North Shore day; the North Shore guide has the rest.

  • What works: Curated local makers, six hours at Ala Moana Center, a Black Friday date.
  • What to know: The market’s pages post no admission price or parking information. A Hawaiʻi Pacific University listing calls the Hawaiʻi Kai market free. Dates are sparse after November 14, and Haleʻiwa has one.

Rental car

Hawaiʻi Kai and Haleʻiwa need an early start by car

Hawaiʻi Kai is 10 miles and Haleʻiwa 34 miles from Waikīkī, and both Mālama markets close at 2 p.m., so a car is the practical way to reach them. Compare Oahu rental cars on DiscoverCars.

Other Oahu Craft Fairs This Holiday Season

These are the other Oahu craft fairs we could confirm from each organizer’s own page, in date order. The Hawaiian Mission Houses date comes from Go Hawaii and Hawaiʻi Public Radio listings; the museum’s own events page still showed last year’s fair when we checked.

The two big shows share one hall, the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall, 2.7 miles from Waikīkī. The Islandwide Crafts & Food Expo has run on Black Friday weekend since 1987 and lists more than 250 vendors. The Mele Kalikimaka Marketplace is in its 11th year, produced by Special Events Hawaiʻi, with nearly 300 booths of food, art, jewelry and apparel. Neither organizer posts an admission price on its own site.

The craft fair at Hawaiian Mission Houses is free, with more than 40 Hawaiʻi vendors, and the organizer calls it Honolulu’s oldest. The grounds hold the 1821 Frame House and 1831 Chamberlain House, which the site calls the two oldest Western-style structures in Hawaiʻi; 75-minute tours are $20, or $15 for kamaʻāina, seniors and military, and $10 for students.

The JCCH fairs are free, and the center’s gift shop and Historical Gallery stay open until 3 p.m. on both dates. In Waikīkī, the Monday market at Waikiki Beach Walk offers handcrafted goods, food and live entertainment, free to shoppers. See our things to do in Waikiki and Honolulu City Lights guides for more.
